ONDA Vi40 Elite 16GB
Hello,
I wonder if you can help me. I am not at all familiar with computers, it has taken all my knowledge to find myself here, so please consider this when explaining anything technical to me.
My son would like a one of these Tablet computers for his 16th birthday.
So he spends all his time on these internet discussion forums, such as this, and generally browsing, at what I'm unsure but I'd probably be better not knowing. Besides this he plays computer games, he also likes to speak with his girlfriend on a website we can see her and talk face to face, cyber like anyway. He plays music and is a bit of an amatuer photographer and so he stores quite a few photos on the computer. He also enjoys games, I can hear him playing games all hours of the night sometimes. And finally he will be taking time out and going to Haiti on a project for 3 months, I would very much like to beable to do the online chat and see him while he is away, so from what I understand he will need portable connectivity for the internet, via a dongle...? And I understand this is with Claro or Orange, i think.
So I happened to come across this ONDA vi40 Elite in my search of the mountain of units there are, it is so confusing as I don't understand anything I am looking at, but it seems to get good reviews.
Could any of you experts please help me and tell me if I am looking in the right direction, I can't afford to spend a fortune, but I'd like to buy something of quality that will last and can do all of the above, and some. The budget should not exceed the Onda price tag.
I would appreciate any advice very much indeed.
Thanks.

Re: ONDA Vi40 Elite 16GB
I don't know what part of the world you're in but I see this model retailing for £200 in the UK. I've never heard of the brand before and the main reputable competitors at the £200 price range are Amazon Fire (US only), Nook Tablet (US only) and Archos will be releasing a £200 Android tablet.
Some other manufacturers re-brand cheap chinese made tablets and some have high quality manufacture plants in China. Personally and at this price point, I'd look for a second hand or refurbished Android made by a better known brand like Samsung / Asus etc.

Re: ONDA Vi40 Elite 16GB
The people that come here usually owns TabletPCs, which are more expensive and behave more like laptops. You'd get better help by going to a forum dedicated exclusively to Android tablets, instead. But I'll try to answer your question to the best of my knowledge.... I've heard of Onda. They are a popular 2nd-tier manufacturer of MP3 Players. I think they operate mostly in Asia and have recently made an inroad into the tablet market. Their products are decent for the low price they sell, so I would not dismiss them.
You did not state your budget, so I'll guess it's $200. In that price range, I have 2 suggestions. Both seem to support 3G dongles (for Internet access) and, unlike the Onda Vi40, both also seem to have full access to the Android Market (where your kid can download apps and games). So, to my mind, the 2 models below are better than the Onda you found. However, I'm not and Android expert, so try to get a second opinion.
ZeniThink C91 Tablet --> 10", Android 4.0, 3G, USB, HDMI, WiFi, 2MP Camera.
Flytouch 6 Tablet ------> 10", Android 4.0, 3G, USB, HDMI, WiFi, 2MP Camera, GPS.
Seems better than the 3 other machines, but it also seems more expensive. It's up to you to decide which compromises you're willing to make and where you'll draw the line between features and price. I hope this helps.OK, so what do you make of this model Samsung Galaxy Tab GT-P7100 16GBHi! I'm a Tablet PC....and I'm not a goddamn toy.
HP TM2 (i5-430UM, ATI HD-5450) | HP TC1100 (Celeron 800MHz).

Re: ONDA Vi40 Elite 16GB
It should be highly adequate for the tasks you have set out in your OP, Samsung are a highly regarded manufacturer. Most if not all the technical reviews (CNET / Engadget / etc) I've seen are favourable of the quality of build and use.
Certainly for a 3 month trip to Haiti or similar - its light weight and construction will prove to be useful.
