Tablet for Adobe Premiere CS4
Hi.
this is my first post, so please be gentle
I am looking for a tablet mainly to do video editing with Adobe Premiere CS4 and maybe some gaming.
General Questions.
1. What is your budget?
up to £1200 ($1800)
2. Would you consider purchasing used/refurbished?
refurbished yes but not used
3. Do you prefer a Slate, Convertible or Ultra Mobile PC (UMPC)?
would prefer Slate, but could go for a convertible
4. What size Tablet PC would you prefer?
* Mainstream ~ 12.1"
* Large ~ 13.3"
5. Which country do you intent to purchase from?
UK, but as I have family in the States, I could go there as well
6. Do you have any preferences to brand loyalty or dislikes?
open for everything
7. How many hours battery life do you require?
I know, that will not be great
8. What will be the primary usage scenario of this tablet? (Email/Web Surfing/Drawing/Word Processing/Entertainment/Notetaking etc)
mainly for video editing (Adobe Premiere CS4), movies and a bit of gaming (the later is a benefit, but not necessary)
9. Do you have an OS preference?
No
10. What software and tasks do you intend to run? (Microsoft Office or other Word Processing Suite/Photoshop/3D Studio Max/Autocad etc)
Adobe Premiere CS4 and other Adobe programs
10. Do you intend on playing Games? If so please list.
Yes. GTA and Command & Conquer
Screen Specifics
1. What resolution do you prefer?
open for everything, but prefer WXGA
Component Specifics
2. Do you require an Optical (CD/DVD) Drive to be built in?
Not required, as I could just connect an external one
3. Do you require ability to add a second Battery or Hard Drive (Modular Bay technology)?
That would be a great benefit but is not high on the list.
I was looking at the Asus EP121, would that be a good machine for it?
Thank you so much in advance.

Re: Tablet for Adobe Premiere CS4
The only tablet right now that has dedicated graphics is the Fujitsu T901 with Nvidia graphic card option. That would be your best bet for doing video editing and light gaming.
I highly recommend against the EP121, I bought one for animation, video editing, and light gaming and was appalled at how slow it was. Great for sketching/small paintings, but the ultra low voltage processor crippled it badly. It couldn't handle big brushes and I hate the lag on everything. The T901 is a convertible though, but I think you'll find with a bit of research around here, it is the only tablet PC that will come close to the power you want... just don't expect a gaming machine. The graphics card has 1gig dedicated ram but it is designed and intended for graphic heavy applications (like CS4), it's not a gaming card.
Perhaps with windows 8 being released soon and the eventual release of Ivy bridge processors, you may have more options in a year for tablet PC's that are gaming capable? But I'm not gonna get my hopes up...
Good luck

Re: Tablet for Adobe Premiere CS4
agreed. The ep121 can barley handle Photoshop CS4....I don't even want to think how bad Premier CS4 would fare.
Also I don't really want to assume anything, but since this is your first post, I'm gonna guess you think a tablet is a viable option for Video Editing and Gaming since so many people use the Ipad for those needs. Video Editing apps and Ipad Games are taylor made for the Ipad but in no way compare in the complexity of full Desktop programs. For a quick youtube upload its fine...but pro grade work needs a proper machine. Tablet PCs...although far more powerful then the Ipad.....aren't really the proper machine for Video editing or gaming. And for the price premium you're going to pay for something like the Fujitsu T901 ($2000 I think)....you can much easily get a far more powerful regular laptop that can handle video editing & Gaming at a far lesser cost. And if tablet functionality is still needed...you can pick up an usb Wacom Intuos5 from Best Buy or Staples.
...wait a second....did I just recommend a Intuos over a Tablet PC?......I've been spending way too much time in those ConceptArt forums.Lenovo X-61 Tablet - 1.6 ghz, 4 gb ram
Gateway C-120X - 1.06 ghz, 2 gb ram (dead)
Hp TC1100 - 1.1 ghz, 1.5 gb ram
Ls800 - 1.2 ghz, 2 gb ram
Eee PC T-91, 1.3 ghz, 2 gb ram
Ipad 16gb Wi-FI (it does count as a tablet)
HP Slate 500 - 1.86 ghz, 2 gb ram
Asus Ep121 - 1.33 ghz, 4gb ram
Samsung Series 7 Slate - 1.6 ghz, 4 gb of ram

I can certainly see why you get to that conclusion, but I can assure you, that is not the case. I still have my proper computer here at home which will stay my main machine. The tablet would be something for the road, when I am away.
Rhanks for the tip with the Fujitsu. I have a look into that.

Re: Tablet for Adobe Premiere CS4
I run photoshop CS5 on an old fujitsu 5010 lifebook and it runs fairly well. Fujitsu makes the best tablet PC's for graphic artists, hands down.
I'm actually looking to upgrade to a T901 or something soon.
I put in my own memory upgrades and a faster hard drive, so the performance is far better than a stock 5010 would have.
My point is, if a much older lifebook model can run CS5 very well, the newer ones should be fine.
