I'm looking for a laptop replacement

General Questions.

1. What is your budget?
2000 ish (incluiding warranty), but I'd rather find something cheaper. This is the price for an almost maxed out x200t. Thinking of a pc that I wouldn't have to replace in a while.

2. Would you consider purchasing used/refurbished?

3. Do you prefer a Slate, Convertible or Ultra Mobile PC (UMPC)?
Preferably a convertible, but would consider a slate

4. What size Tablet PC would you prefer?

Does this refer to screen size or the size of the device? Smallest device if possible, screen at least the size of an iPad

5. Which country do you intent to purchase from?
USA, or Mexico if possible (but doubt it)

6. Do you have any preferences to brand loyalty or dislikes?
not really

7. How many hours battery life do you require?
4hrs or so at least. Not that important since it'll be usually used near outlets, and giving the other requirements batterly life might not be that long anyway.

8. What will be the primary usage scenario of this tablet?
Note taking, drawing, software programing and compiling. It's a laptop replacement, not a tablet in addition to. I have a desktop pc that deals with gaming or whatever, so this one could be not the fastest etc. to have a less bulky laptop (I'm replacing a precision m50, teehee ).

9. Do you have an OS preference?
Windows 7, ultimate preferably

10. What software and tasks do you intend to run?
Compilers & programming IDEs, one note, virtual pc, remote desktops

10. Do you intend on playing Games? If so please list.
Not particularly, doubt any would run rift. minimum gpu is something that will allow for full aero ui

1. What resolution do you prefer?
the larger the better

2. Do you require the screen to be readable in sunlight?
not that important

3. Do you prefer your display to be glossy or matte?
I suppose matte, but not that important

4. Do you require Touch? (without pressure sensitivity) (Which one: resistive or capacitive)
Yes, pressure levels preferred

5. Do you require a Pen? (with pressure sensitivity) (Which one: Wacom or N-Trig)
Yes, pressure levels preferred. And handwritting recognition.

Component Specifics

1. What size Hard Drive and Memory do you require?
at least 4gb ram and 130gb had, ssd preferable.

2. Do you require an Optical (CD/DVD) Drive to be built in?
no

3. Do you require ability to add a second Battery or Hard Drive (Modular Bay technology)?
no

Misc
1. Other non specific items ~ please add other items you require not covered above?
powerful cpu, if it supports virtuallization the better. I guess not Atom cpu's, but i5 might be good enough.

2. Additional requests ~ anything other you wish to take into consideration?
I've considered Lenovo's x200t and the samsung series 7, but wanted to make sure there weren't other options I was missing. The hp elitebooks seem to skyrocket in price, and the tm2t seems discontinued.
Are there convertibles or slates with gps in addition to the points above?

Keep an eye out on the new Samsung series 7-8 slates, they're using core i5's and run windows.

Also if you found one with windows 7 home or something you could always install w7 ultimate over the top, or even w8 when it comes out (or the beta)

The other powerful one maybe is the Asus EP121, core i5, can play sc2 on low. w7 is a pain to use on a tablet, that's why i'm looking into a w7 one that I will install w8 to later.

Well, the issue is that the x200t is no longer sold new, and you're looking for something new. It's a few years old.

You should look at the Lenovo x220t (12.5", 16:9 ratio), the HP2760 (12.1" 16:10 ratio), the Fujistu t901 (13.1", 16:10 ratio) and the Fujitsu t580 (10" screen). Those are your basic options if you want a new convertible tablet pc with pen input. They all run 1200-2000$ (I think), have fully powered cpus, and can take 8 or more GB of ram. Eventually, it's mostly a matter of opinion, though the T901 is clearly bigger, and has the option of an independent graphics card. It's also at the upper limit of your budget.

Add the Fujitsu T731 as a 12" option from that brand.

VT support has been present for a long time. Even the 2006 generation had VT capable C2Ds, so no problem with that.
If you need a powerful CPU, I'd recommend getting something with a full voltage CPU, which should be any of the current convertible models, not sure for the T580, though.


I am just really wondering why you would consider a slate. Have you ever tried using an IDE with just a pen? I would back off that idea so fast...

My mistake, I confused it with the x220t.
