For that price, size, with a capacitive digitizer, without an active digitizer and pretty much requiring Windows to use Word you may have to wait for some of the upcoming tablets. I believe Asus, Viewsonic and HTC are planning Win7 tablets.

Just going off memory, and keeping in mind that it's late at night here, there should be several small Windows tablets with capacitive digitizers by next spring.

If you were okay with a resistive digitizer you could go with several tablets right now under $500 like those from Viliv or Archos.

Reading pdf files is mostly about resolution and I think those tablets have enough resolution to be pleasant enough, especially if you crop the white space.

As for an outdoor readable screen similar to the Pixel Qi--I don't believe that's available in a small format at any price yet. There are a few tablets with reflective screens, but I would wait for the upcoming ones.

We have a few threads asking for the specs you've requested including the active digitizer you once wanted. It's the tablet of the future, if ever. I'm sure you'll hear plenty about it if it's ever made. A compact Windows tablet that's great for reading outdoors and writing on with a nice touch screen...it'll do well if it comes to market at $1000 and dominate if it's anywhere near $500.
