Default Is it possible to work with excel in a tablet?

    Hi.

I was looking for a notebook a few weeks ago, something with great video card, huge screen, lots of HD, something that would substitute my desktop PC.

I ended up with the problems of portability and battery duration.

Most of the the time I spend in front of a computer is working/developing in Excel or surfing on the internet, doing researches or just for fun.

Iīm not into games anymore and even if I want to play something I can go to my desktop PC which isnīt that bad yet for the games Iīm used to play.

So Iīm changing for something smaller, lighter, something that can take me away from my chair and desk.

With all that in mind, I need your help to choose one tablet PC for me.

    General Questions.

    1. What is your budget?

Donīt know, something around $2.000 is enough?

    2. Do you prefer a Slate, Convertible or Ultra Mobile PC (UMPC)?

    Convertible

    3. What size Tablet PC would you prefer?

    13~15"

    USA or Brazil.

    No.

    At least 4h.

Most of the time to surf the web, to run some spreadsheets in Excel and a little bit of Photoshop.

    8. Do you have an OS preference?

    Windows XP or Vista.

    9. What software and tasks do you intend to run?

70% - Internet explorer, MS Office (Excel, Power Point and Word), Outlook Express.
10% - Watching videos from the internet
    10% - Photoshop
10% - Autocad, Solidworks and Catia. (just for visualization purposes, not to design on the tablet, no need for dedicated video card)

    10. Do you intend playing Games. If so please list.

    No.

    Screen Specifics

    1. Do you prefer standard or widescreen?

    If possible wide.

    2. What resolution do you prefer?

SXGA - 1400x1050 ~ Small text and graphic icons which require good vision but the gain is a much larger screen.

    or

WXGA - 1280x768 ~ Wider viewing angle of XGA but ideal for viewing Spreadsheets and other programs that require desktop space.

    3. Do you require an Indoor only or Indoor/Outdoor screen option?

    Indoor.

    4. Do you require a Passive or Active Digitizer?

    Active.

    5. Do you require Wacom, Finepoint, or N-Trig Technology?

Wacon? I really donīt know, never tested any of them.

    Component Specifics

    1. What size Hard Drive and Memory do you require?

The HD donīt need more than 60~80Gb.

    2 or 4Gb of RAM.

    2. Do you require an Optical Drive?

Does they usually have an optical drive? I guess I need one, unless I can install things trough a network using my desktop optical drive?

    3. Do you require ability to add a second Battery or Hard Drive (Modular Bay technology)?

    No.

    Misc

Good processor, something better than my desktop processor (Athlon 3200 64bits), something like a Core 2 Duo 1.6 ~ 2.0 to run some spreadsheets fast.

Fast wifi and if possible bluetooth.

That fingerprint thing would be nice but I can live without it.

VGA or HDMI out to connect to my LCD display.

There are two tablets that fit your size requirements the Asus R1F,13.3'', but it suffers from battery drain and static issues, and the Gateway c142x/xl, 14''.

The c142x has intel x3100 graphics and the c142xl had ati dedicated graphics. Its has a built in optical drive and all the other specifications you mentioned.

Re excel you can't write into the cells normally you can use the tip to write into formula area but it seems like a waste of time, and you can ink into the cells, using the review button, but there is no character recognition. It doesn't seem very efficient.

    Thank you very much.

Iīll take a look at these models you suggested.

And thanks for the info about the use of excel on a tablet.

Iīll go to a store and try any HP tablet before buying because they are much easier to find here in Brazil.
