General Questions.
1. What is your budget?
up to $1900
2. Do you prefer a Slate, Convertible or Ultra Mobile PC (UMPC)?
convertible, but slate acceptable
3. What size Tablet PC would you prefer?
12" or up
4. Which country do you intent to purchase from?
US
5. Do you have any preferences to brand loyalty or dislikes?
HP (employee discount)
6. How many hours battery life do you require?
at least 10
7. What do you intend to use the Tablet for?
college life (downloading music, playing movies, net surfing, but with the occasional taking notes...
)
8. Do you have an OS preference?
windows only, but NO VISTA!
9. What software and tasks do you intend to run?
microsoft office tablet pc edition
10. Do you intend playing Games. If so please list.
some online games, so need good memory but no fancy graphics card or anything
Screen Specifics
1. Do you prefer standard or widescreen?
standard, but if widescreen is available in my budget that'd be great
2. What resolution do you prefer?
something typical of a workstation laptop
3. Do you require an Indoor only or Indoor/Outdoor screen option?
indoor mostly, outside option would be nice but not a make/break factor
4. Do you require a Passive or Active Digitizer?
passive, with pen availability
5. Do you require Wacom or Finepoint Technology?
wacom
Component Specifics
1. What size Hard Drive and Memory do you require?
at least 100-120 gb hd with atleast 1 gb memory
2. Do you require an Optical Drive?
read dvds, write cds
3. Do you require ability to add a second Battery or Hard Drive (Modular Bay technology)?
if you think i might need it for college

mostly, i'm a college student looking to replace an outdated laptop. i need something to play movies and music, download lots of stuff, surf the internet, and take notes. i have a pretty good budget and could potentially go up but would prefer to not have to...

Given your need for a built-in optical drive and that of your generous budget, consider the Fujitsu T4220.
With standard battery + bay battery, maximum up time is 8 hrs.

Alternatively, you may also consider the Fujitsu T2010 (but it does not have a built-in optical drive). With its extended battery (hi-cap), endurance is 11 hrs (max).

If you really depend on a full day 10+ hours battery runtime, there's only the ULV processor option. That limits your choices.
I think the t2010 can go 7-9 hours which is more realistic on its extended battery, the HP 2710p runs ~5h on the standard. Anyway you'll need 2 batteries then. Donno if there is an external charger available for these, but this would add some convenience.
