Default How good is the UMPC HDD Shock Protection?

Majority of the UMPCs out there uses HDD. I was wondering, how good is their shock protection? Does it reach the SSD level?

My UMPC usage patterns I believe will be a device that I use on the go. Walking, Waiting at the bus stop, In the bus, etc... Unlike a Tablet, the UMPC is going to be a device that I can pull out, power on and use almost instantly. I expect it to be subjected to rigorous movements, e.g:

Waiting for a train at the train station. When the train comes, I simply close the lid and hold it in my hand and walk into the train. Once inside, I open it and use it again.

Basically what I'm saying is that for UMPC that uses HDD (and not SSD), must I still treat it as gently as I treat my laptop/tablet? Will being rough in terms of movement/shaking damage it?

Normal 2.5" or 1.8" hdd are already shock resistant. But not as good as a SSD.But with the shock protection via shock sensor (if the UMPC has it), they are even able to manage greater shocks.

I have a tablet and use it like you described how you will use your UMPC. I carry it around the whole day, using it in the train, on the road, or somewhere else, I walk and even run with it very often (damn trains). I use it about half a year now. I don't know how long the hard drive will work in these environments, but I think long enough
2.5" hard drives are designed for mobile use, shocks, etc. And with the shock sensors they will manage greater shocks even better and "switch" off while doing your descibed task:
Waiting for a train at the train station. When the train comes, I simply close the lid and hold it in my hand and walk into the train. Once inside, I open it and use it again.
So take a SSD only if you want to work with your UMPC while shaking it or you want a faster HDD, less power consumption, less heat and also less money

Interestingly enough, when I opened my FlipStart UMPC to upgrade the 30GB drive to a 60GB, I found the hard drive ensconced in a nice rubber bracket that appeared to cushion it quite well from impact on all 4 sides. Given that the 1.8" drives are fairly robust to begin with, I'm not too concerned... not planning to play football with it.
