Default M400 - Vista RTM - Audio Not Working

Anyone get audio working in Vista RTM on a M400? I loaded both Sigmatel drivers on the toshiba site. URL: http://www.csdsupport.toshiba.com/ta...es&model_id=10
Vista says everything is running correctly but I'm getting no sound. Anyone get this to work?

Other than this little problem, everything else seems to be working fine.

Thanks,
Howard

Those who had this problem on the M7 found they simply had to boot back into XP, unmute the volume, and then boot Vista. Apparently if you left the volume muted in XP before your Vista install, the new OS doesn't know how to "unmute" (because in Vista, mute just means reducing the volume to 0).

Tried that?

Going back to XP will be a little difficult, I did a XP --> Vista upgrade.

Well, if there's a linux boot CD build that would support your sound card, that might be another way to go about it. You just need some kind of NON-Vista OS to unmute the sound.

Went the linux route and now everything works like a charm. Loaded the CD version of Slackware on a USB drive and was able to enable sound in linux.

Thanks for the help.

You're welcome; good to know that this workaround is available for those who can't easily get back into XP.

I find myself in the same boat with my Tecra M7. I upgraded to Vista Enterprise with the sound muted and now, nothing but silence.

I've been researching ways of booting from SD card, since I don't own a USB drive, and was wondering if anyone could provide some details on own someone could go about creating a bootable SD card with enough of an OS on it to be able to unmute the sound.

Any suggestions?

Size:
How big is your biggest SD card? If it is near 1 GB, you should be able to use any of the linux Live CD distros. If it is 512 MB or less, you'll need to look into some of the mini-CD distros (I think there's even one named TinyLinux). Wikipedia has a good, comprehensive table of Linux distributions, including those with bootable CDs and the general features of each.

Formatting:
I'd start by downloading the Toshiba Bootable SD formatter from the Toshiba Vista support site. It might be as simple as running that utility, and copying the extracted files from a bootable Linux ISO.

I've used both the Toshiba SD Memory Boot utility and Card Format utility. The Boot utility requires a floppy img, flp, or vfd image to work. It does not read ISOs.

The Card Format utility does not appear to make an SD card bootable by itself and attempts to extract the contents of an ISO to the SD card after it's been formatted do not lead to a bootable SD card either.

Has anyone been successful booting from an SD card that contains more than just a floppy image on it?

You should be able to find a Linux boot floppy *.img somewhere (here's one, ftp://mirror.cs.wisc.edu/pub/mirrors...s/bootdisk.img) - try combining that boot sector with an ISO extraction.

What I don't really get is this: why can't any of you just burn a CD-R?
