    Default M700 cpu upgrade woes -- fan speed always 100%

    I have an M700 with a stock T7250 2.0ghz cpu. I bought a used T7700 2.4ghz (SLA43) and replaced the T7250. All was fine except the fan always ran at 100%; nothing I could do (such as changing power plan settings) would slow it down. The 100% speed was immediate upon powering up, before Windows loads, then it stays at 100% until the laptop turns off.

    When I put the T7250 back, all was well again with the fan. (I barely hear it most of the time.)

    It is not a heat issue; I used Arctic Silver 5 and the T7700 temp never exceeded 45 C, mostly it ran in the 30s C

    I am running bios 1.8, EC 1.1 (I tried re-installing BIOS 1.8 but it wouldn't let me. I'd try updating the EC but I don't see an update package for it.)

    I run Windows 7 32-bit ultimate 4gb ram (2gbx2)

    Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

    ------
    Update: To test whether there was a problem with the T7700 cpu, I put it in my HP 8510w (replacing a T7500 SLAF8). The T7700 is working fine in the 8510w.
    -------
    Update 2: I tried putting the T7500 that I took out of my 8510w in the M700 and got the same 100% fan-all-the-time issue. (Otherwise, the computer works fine.) I am convinced that this is not a Windows issue, because the fan is at 100% before booting into Windows (when accessing the BIOS, for example). I also downgraded to BIOS 1.7 and cleared the CMOS by disconnecting the RTC battery, but these did not change the 100% fan-all-the-time issue. So I would caution folks with an M700 & T7250 cpu that an upgrade to a T7500 or T7700 may not work. My M700 model number is: PPM70U-06M01E01

    Hi tanstaffl;
    Did you ever figure out what caused the 100% fan speed problem in your machine? I like the tablet option on laptops, & the style of the Toshiba models. I had a Portege M200, & a Tecra M4 that the CPU upgraded without a hitch. I have the same model M700 as you do, & tried doing extensive research on this model. Got mine off Ebay which I believe was a part of a lot of machines that was ordered through some company with a certain configuration in order to maybe save some dough or something. It didn't come with bluetooth either, but I installed the BT module with no problems. XP nor Win 7 recognizes it when doing a clean install, but it works well when I install Toshiba drivers in either OS.

    From what I've read in your post, it doesn't appear to be a bios problem. On my research, I also noticed that my model doesn't support the "finger-touch" option for tablet input. It seems the default model (possibly the most popular configuration) that comes standard with bluetooth, & the finger-touch input option generally came with a 2,2 or 2.4ghz CPU with 4mb L2 cache, so being afraid not to over-do it, I just got a T7500 to try, & got the same results as you. It seemed to handle it fine, ran really cool, & I loved the noticeable faster speed, but got the dreaded 100% fan speed as well.

    Something I never noticed in any other machine before was this one has something called a "coolsheet" that sits inline right next to the CPU that has about the same dimensions as the CPU. I was skeptical to mess with it, but I went to a parts suppiler I shop at, & compared my model number, with that of a model number that shipped with a 2.4ghz CPU, & it came up as the same part were used for both units. Never tried looking for an upgrade with only 2mb L2 cache. I'm just thinking now that it's a motherboard thing as trying to do research on that it looks as though there were 2 chipsets used for the GM965 series...one was used an 82801HM I/O Controller, & the other used an 82801HEM I/O Controller. Don't know what that means really, but hey, this is a "learning in progress" for me, didn't take any schooling for stuff like this, but I'm trying to cover what avenues I can...hehheh.

    Well, as it is, this is still about the best dual core tablet laptop that I've ever owned keeping financial limits in mind. But at the very least I found someone else that's tried this.
    Thanks for listening

    By the way, when you mentioned "trying to update the EC", what does EC mean?

    Sorry for the late reply; I haven't been back to the forum in a while. I never was able to upgrade the cpu. "EC" stands for "Embedded Controller." I too have upgraded the CPU on other Toshiba tablets (M200, M400, Tecra M7) with no problems. Wish I could help. I am tempted to by a motherboard on eBay and trying a replacement, but I have never done that degree of work on a laptop.

    Good to hear from ya tanstaafl;
    Frankly, I didn't think I'd would hear from ya at all seein that this post is a couple of years old now. Also kinda surprised you never got a response from anybody!!! Well, since my last post I bought another M700 model #S7005V that already has all the features...bluetooth, & the finger-touch option, & a 2.4ghz cpu, & for $100 less then the first one. Yeah, when I bought the first one, I also didn't know that only certain models supported touch which was what I really wanted. I really like the M700 model, it's the only 12" screen that I can see well without putting on my readers. Yeah, I've never dug to deep in laptops either as far as changing motherboards. When I installed the bluetooth module in the first one, I just about had the motherboard out as it was, luckily I found a website from a guy that had instructions, plus pics on a complete teardown, & removal of all parts...helped tremendously. I think that's an interesting memory location configuration, if you wanna upgrade both banks ya gotta pull the keyboard to get at one of them.
