For those not ready to hack their power supply, I submitted a tip request to Xpal, which makes power adapter tips for Energizer external batteries. I just got this reply:

    "Dear Dave,

The tip for the HP Slate 500 is in our new development list. We will keep your inquiry status open on our database and keep you updated when the tip is ready.

    Thank you for your patience.

    XPAL Power"

Good news or a polite brushoff?

I'll let people know if I hear anything more.

Yeah, polite brush off (got the exact same response). Put in the request way back in February. Haven't heard anything since. Kind of shady.

I am about to hack my extra cable and convert to use with xpal.

Thanks for that update. I'm eager to see who will be the first one to make a tip for the Slate 500. Then again, will future slate PCs released by HP use the same type of connector?

I'm in the process of making a tip that I can use with my Tekkeon myPower ALL.

    I'm using:

    DC JACK 2.5/5.5MM
    DC PLUG 2.5/5.5mm

and I got my parts from here: Universal Radio shortwave, amateur, scanner and CB radio since 1942

By the way, 2.5/5.5mm is the same size as the tips found on some of the older HP/Compaq and Lenovo power adapters. It's a very common size.
