    Hi Scrambler
Here is the original manifest. Your help much appreciated!

    </dependentAssembly>

Based on this, I see nothing wrong in the modified manifest you posted initially, except you seem to still have spaces at the beginning of each line, I would try to remove that and see if it makes a difference.

When you say it does not work, do you get any error message, or it just does not change the UI.

I will try to get to a windows 10 machine and retest there myself with Photoshop.

EDIT: I just tried to make the manifest changes on photoshop on a windows 10 laptop and it worked, so the registry key change is the same for windows 10.

So if the spaces are mentioned above are not it, not sure what is up.
If you understand how to look in the registry, you could check to make sure the key has been added properly by the reg file.

Also make sure the manifest file is in the same folder as the executable with the same name and the manifest extension added

I removed all the dashes . No error messages, just no change to the Illustrator UI

I know you did remove the dashes, but when I copied you original code there were spaces at the beginning of each line. they may have come from copying from here though.
Not sure what else to suggest at that point

could someone explain all this to me in layman's term. sry I'm a designer, so I'm not getting all this code. where do I put the registry key?
was there a typo in the original post.
because I see prefer-external-manisfest.reg and manifest without the "s"

could someone please explain what steps and codes I need to put where. thanks

    for the first part:
    I downloaded prefer-external-manisfest.reg and remove-prefer-external-manisfest.reg

    1) Where do I put these ".reg" files on my computer?
    2) Are these spelled correctly because there is an extra "s" in manifest.

    for the second part
    3) Creating the manifests, do I need to follow this because I downloaded your "Photoshop.exe.manifest" file

    1) does not matter, they will execute when you double click on them regardless of where they are
    2) there is a spelling mistake in the name of the file, but that is of no consequence, when you double click the file, it execute what is inside, the name is irrelevant
    3) If you have the same version as the provided manifest is for, you do not need to bother with creating your own, you can just use the one provided and place is where explained
