In their (weak) defense: you can turn all that stuff off, it's just a pain that so many intrusive/annoying features are on by default.

True and I did that for her, but the default should be off but that the user can choose to enable it. IMHO

Well, based on the comments Ars Technica users are also not particularly fond of the most recent changes in Edge:
Users revolt as Microsoft bolts a short-term financing app onto Edge

I especially liked the comment by user Edified. Quite a list of potentially bad behaviors:

Other Built-In Defaults that are concerning:
    - Use a web service to help resolve navigation errors
    - Suggest similar sites when a website can't be found
    - Show suggestions from Pinterest in Collections
    - Search for curated suggestions from Pinterest that may be related to your collection
    - Save time and money with Shopping in Microsoft Edge
    - Show opportunities to support causes and nonprofits you care about
    - Show travel recommendations in Microsoft Edge
    - Enhance images in Microsoft Edge (What???)
    - Show mini menu when selecting text
    - Use Microsoft Editor "Unleash your inner writer"
    - Automatically open Edge bar when the computer starts
    - Open Office files in the browser instead of downloading to your device
    - Math Solver button
    - Search Bing in Sidebar
    - Improve your web experience by allowing Microsoft to use your browsing history from this account for personalizing advertising, search, news and other Microsoft services
    - Show Rewards in Microsoft Edge
    - New Tab Page URL can't be changed without domain joining a device, even in Windows 10/11 Pro
    - New Tab Page Geolocates for weather even when location is turned off in privacy
    - New Tab Page requires MS Apps, Weather, MS Rewards, Bing Search Box and headlines (this is in "Focused/Custom mode with Content Off)

What pisses me off more than anything else is: guess which settings are some of the only things that don't sync when you sign in with your profile on a new device / install? That's right, disabling any of these services.

And honestly, I'd also have no problem with Microsoft developing this stuff and promoting it all as extensions. There is absolutely no reason though to build it all into the browser. Lately Microsoft has been doing a lot to ruin any good will they've earned with Edge (or similarly, look at the whole .NET 'Hot Reload' open-source fiasco that they ended up having to reverse).

Agreed wholeheartedly. It used to be the non-evil alternative to Chrome, but at this point I'm pretty close to switching to Firefox. Windows 11 itself is also leaving a bit of a bad taste, very curious how far they'll take this kind of nonsense.

Edit: seems like we're not alone! :D https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/202...ts-heavy-handed-tactics-make-it-hard-to-love/
