Am I correct, though, that this only applies to the Insider Preview Build and not to Windows 10 that one gets under the "regular" Windows 10 free update program/system?

For now at least, yes. Presumably when the current preview is 'finished' and made public it'll be global though.

Thanks for the news. Would be good to see this fully adopted, to avoid having to do an update followed by clean install.

Between automatic updates and TIP feature regression, I'm not going to Win 10 on my main devices. So two of the 110 million they report as Windows 10 installs, I can say are on my test machines that I never use for anything anymore.

Amen to that! I thought I was the only holdout! Love W8.1 on tablets. August 2016 can't come late enough!

With automatic updates, I won't even consider Win 10 for my desktop. Twice now, I've found my one Win 10 test machine locked up when it failed during an update in the middle of the night. Also, my test laptop, I pull the battery out so the blasted thing can't try to update on its own.

Oh, I should mention that my eighty something mother has now started calling me for computer support because her laptop got updated to Win 10. Her printer connection problems had nothing to do with the update. It just that she associates any problem with the update. Why the OS assigns an IP address for the port when adding a printer when the OS should know that the router is set for dynamic IP address assignment and said printer will stop working.
