"The next major Windows 10 update will focus on design". You know, I'd actually love that, but somehow it seems like I have heard this before! Let's hope they manage to tie up a lot of loose ends this time.

So take this for what it is, which isn't specific in any way....

Our lead developer basically sent a WTH email to Microsoft as we had started work and spent significant resources already on developing for Windows X.

The response was detail free other than MS is going to publicly clarify status of Windows X and windows generally by the end of the month.

Build is coming up at the end of the month right? I'd imagine they'd give some indication there.

And we wonder why they find it difficult to get devs to support any of their numerous failed projects.

Beat me to it. I had just read that article and I came here to post the link. ;)

Nice word of post mortem at the end: “Although Windows 10X seems to be joining CE, RT, and S on the scrap heap, that doesn't necessarily mean its development was wasted effort. We expect to see elements of Windows 10X's design show up in the Sun Valley refresh of Windows 10 later this year.”

We hope so. we put more than a good bit of work in to X already and my already annoyed lead developer is likely to lose it, if that was all for naught.

And to be clear, the appeal for us specifically is not that we want to make a chromebook competitor, or for that matter a NEO clone either, but the greatly slimmed down and more efficient core code would be very beneficial for our type of custom devices.

Is it not possible for MS to let you have what they're abandoning so you can build on it?

Unfortunately no. It's a complex issue related to the way MS sells licenses to OEMs (which we are for our devices) and ongoing support.

Other companies including us have made the request such as with Windows CE, but were turned down.
