I need a tablet primarily for note taking purposes, but I heard that the tx1000 had a horrible inking experience because of its passive screen.

I also heard that writing with a lot of pressure helps.

I normally write with a lot of pressure. For example, I have to buy fairly thick mechanical pencils because the thinner ones keep breaking, especially when I'm trying to write fast.

How hard do you have to press for the inking to be effective for fast note taking?

I've actually found it much easier for me to write on these screens than on standard Tablet PC screens. My tx1220 is great for taking notes. Granted, some of it might be helped by the fact that I've been using PDAs for years, and they work on sorta the same screen. I write with a lot of pressure as well, and haven't had any problems. You should be ok as well I think.
