On my2760p, the USB port on the left (the one that can be used for charging things even when the tablet is off) has a hole next to it that appears to have no function.

    Anybody know what it's for?

If you notice there is a little plastic tab that raises up and blocks the hole when you push the little rectangle near the rubber foot on the bottom (which gets pushed by a plastic tab on the Slim Dock when its attached) I assume it is meant for some kind of USB dock system that has a protrusion on the USB cable -so you would be able to only use either that specific USB dock, or the Slim Dock at any given time.... but I've never seen said USB dock so its only a guess...

That is extra power for the usb using the external CD/DVD drive.
It allows you to power the cd/dvd drive without a power supply.
I have one for the tc4400.

    Aha, thanks!

I think it's on these systems for backwards compatibility - I don't see any actual contacts in there.
