Having a tablet pc is more for having fun and be able to do things that you do on your internet desktop or laptop on your touch screen tablet.

There a lot of things that you are leaving out on what you can do:

Record the classes and listen to them later
Record the classes via the camrecorder
    Create a list of homework
Download a student type app where you can get even more ideas

Also, there is music on there so that is something that you can do while you are going from class to class.

my husband uses his for class notes all the time, and the only complaint ive gotten from him is the on screen keyboard so we might be buying a cover that doubles as a keyboard

For me a tablet will never, ever, be a necessity. Other than the stylus there's nothing that I couldn't do with a standard (touchscreen) laptop.

So why did I get one or why have I had so many? I simply LOVE the form factor. Always have, always will, always.

Necessity ... I use it, along with PDF Annotator to mark-up and sign .pdf documents. Only a digital pen gives me enough accuracy to mark-up documents for editing and revision by my office or sign a document in a way that resembles a pen signature.

I got mine because as a Psychology graduate who is wanting to further her studies soon, I need it to read and write notes on a ton of softcopy journals and notes. Just a huge bunch of writing and editing of journals and research papers. Oh and also for filling in research questionnaires that usually require signatures to indicate consent. I also like drawing and the cool factor (and prettiness) of a convertible tablet... been wanting one for years. Eheh.

Tablet is really a good device you can bring everywhere and it's really great. Imagine yourself bringing your desktop all along. LOL!! If you want to play games, use facebook, twitter, emails, web and some simple things then tab is really a necessity. But if you're a programmer or IT specialist, you really need high specs pc or something.

When it comes to product designing or car designing with real life effects and neat work,a tablet is necessary.
Above that,it all depends on for what application you want to use a tablet.
    Regarding notes:
If you want to sketch diagrams with different colors to highlight important a parts in that diagram,in classroom, then it can be useful.
Persionally speaking,Usefulness of handwriting recognistaion and text conversion software depends upon how well the software can understand and convert handwriting to text OR/AND how easily you can edit your handwriting for correcting mistakes if you don't want to convert Handwritting to text.

I've found that, despite a few quirks, my internet browsing is much faster and enjoyable. Also, being a 'hunt and peck' typist, the onscreen keyboard really speeds things up vs. the regular keyboard. Living a mobile lifestyle, having one less thing to carry & worry about (no mouse needed) makes life easier. Using my other (conventional) laptop has now become a chore, and it's basically been relegated to 'backup'.
