If I plug a USB stick or Hard drive or similar into USB port via the standard cable that came with the device a sound plays and sometimes a driver installation runs but the device doesn't show up in explorer. I am expecting a usb stick would be mapped an allocated a drive letter the same as plugging into a laptop etc. What am I missing??

Both of my VT-8's do this randomly, and have since new. My workaround is re-inserting the USB device until it is eventually recognized.

If someone has a better solution or even explanation for the problem, please post.

No standard cable came with the device to connect a usb stick.
You need to have a usb otg cable. Perhaps your cable is, or not.
Try first with a usb stick, because often hard drive needs more power.

You also should have a nearly broken usb connector on your AVN8.
Does when charging, the light stay orange on your on off button?
