ok, i removed the HP_TOOLS partition a LONG LONG time ago.
the question now is , the new UEFI diagnostics and firmware allows installation on a USB thumbdrive. how to update the bios?
    1) the data in the thumbdrive is non bootable.
    2) the BootUp Menu -> System Diagnostics -> BIOS management -> BIOS Update == The System BIOS update failed., Failed reading BIOS image file.

the thumbdrive IS FAT32. formatted by diskpart command.

first time in 25 years i'm having problems updating a firmware.

    I also removed efi partition
I don't think it might be a problem. Anyway we have an option boot efi images from other devices according to manual

BTW, which BIOS you are going to flash ?

Not sure what your trying to do exactly, but the UEFI tool won't work if the HP_TOOLS partition is removed. You can still update BIOS using the windows based BIOS update.

    Hope this helps
