I was looking at some Toshiba models from Toshiba Direct.

On the customisation page they show this:
    256MB PC4200 DDR2 533MHz SDRAM (256MBx1)
    512MB PC4200 DDR2 533MHz SDRAM (256MBx2) [add $50.00]
    512MB PC4200 DDR2 533MHz SDRAM (512MBx1) [add $100.00]
    1024MB PC4200 DDR2 533MHz SDRAM (512MBx2) [add $280.00]
    1024MB PC4200 DDR2 533MHz SDRAM (1024MBx1) [add $575.00]

    On the next page, accessories:
    15% Instant Rebate Kingston 256MB DDR2 SODIMM [$49.30]
    15% Instant Rebate Kingston 512MB DDR2 SODIMM [$97.75]
    15% Instant Rebate Kingston 1GB DDR2 SODIMM [$177.65]

What's the difference? Why would I want to pay $575 for a 1024MBx1 upgrade when I can get the Kingston 1Gb for $177? The machine clearly has two slots and I can presumably just install or have installed the 1GB Kingston alongside the 256Mb one that comes in the machine.

I have looked at the Satellite M60 and the Tecra M4, they both have this huge price disparity.

I wouldn't do either, Toshiba is ripping you off. Get the 256 minimum and buy another 512 for the second slot on Crucial or Kingston from someone like NewEgg. I'm sure that second offer is 1GB (2 x 512MB).

I beleive that the difference is that the RAM offered on the second page is not installed ... you have to install it yourself. That said, it's definitely cheaper to just buy your own RAM and install it. Brian is right on the money, there. :)

    Hello Folks,

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experiences on memory here. Since I am currently a little tight on the doe, Crucial may be out of the question for me. Even Kingston is now around $110.00 -- (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820144183).

Someone at TabletPCBuzz mentioned that this Kingston was $30.00 cheaper a little over a month ago at newegg, for those of you wiht more experience, are there other places besides newegg that I can get these Kingston at a cheaper price? Also, I was looking for Tanscend 1GB and found these, would this be workable for the M4? -- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820208312

Thanks for your help in advance,
    Techson
