I recorded some audio in OneNote during a meeting in a small room, and can barely hear the playback with my ear against the speaker. Is the microphone so weak that it is almost unusable? Or is there some way to calibrate it beyond the obvious? Do I just need to buy an external microphone?

It's not a weak microphone. It's TWO weak microphones!

You should be able to adjust the sensitivity in the Control Panel.

It's only a user problem. The mircophones are good.
You can calibrate them with the Realtek software, maybe this helps.
