WTH is right! Sorry to hear about the latest issues.

I installed the latest windows updates last night and I can't tell any difference so far...

I've only used the News App, Edge (still encountering the occasional video freeze-up), Illustrator, and Manga Studio and haven't heard the fan any more than usual (which, like most have reported, isn't much).

I don't use a dock or external monitor so have nothing to add in that department.

In Windows 8/10, only selected modern apps (not desktop programs) can work while in CS. You can only select seven apps in total to be allowed in CS - they are selected in the lock screen quick status settings. For example, if you disable alarm and mail in lock screen, you won't receive alarm and mail while in CS. Microsoft limits the number of apps allowed in CS to seven to improve battery efficiency. There is no such limit in iOS or Android devices.

Desktop program like Outlook will never receive message in CS. One key benefit of CS is that you can receive message even if the device is put to sleep - so you always get the most up-to-date information while you are still within network range. It saves you time to power on the computer to receive those messages before you go to a place without network (and you certainly don't have to remind you to receive those messages since you know the computer is automatically receiving messages for you)

The issue with power drain in CS has nothing to do with the seven apps you choose - in fact you can completely disable all of them. It has more to do with the Intel driver that prevent the system to execute CS properly (i.e. hardware drive is one major cause for CS failure), or the Windows system (MS's responsibility) that allows backdoor to install updates, maintenance, etc.

On my normally quiet SP4 I have found that Chrome with Flash enabled can really get the fan going by simply navigating the web and not intentionally streaming.

NO - I'm through with clean installs to fix their s@#!, because they just bust them again with the next update. they either get this fixed in the next two weeks or this goes back to MS-land.

I would agree, BUT before this update I used Chrome without this fan running constantly - oh by the way, the fan has now been running constantly for 8 FULL HOURS!

UPDATE: The fan stopped running at 5:53 pm CST - now, do you think it "stopped" or do you think it "stopped dead from abuse" - guess we'll wait and see...

Oh, BTW, the screen only jumped to jumbotron mode once since the last post...

UPDATE - well, so much for the quiet - the fan is back - at least it didn't die...6 minues of peace and quiet...so sad...

Anyone else besides dstrauss try the new firmware? I'm afraid to try it because my SP4 has been pretty rock solid the past month or 2.

Wow. I should have read the forums before I updated. My fans are always on and my machine is extremely hot right now, and all I am doing is browsing the forums...

I updated last night and then used it a bit before bed and off and on throughout the work day Thursday taking notes. I haven't had any issues. Only time the fan has been on was while updating.
