The Surface Pro 2017 doesn't use socketed storage, it has a Samsung chip soldered to the motherboard. There's a second "blank" where an additional chip could go. You can see this (if you know what you're looking for) on the iFixit teardown image. My guess is that the storage chip isn't readily available in higher than 512GB capacity (or is prohibitively expensive), hence the two chip solution for the 1TB Surface Pro.

Surface Book and Surface Book 2 have a standard socketed M.2 SSD connector, so Microsoft wasn't facing any technical or price limitation that would lead them to do dual chip/SSD solutions. It has a single SSD slot for 1 drive.

good to know. not like I could afford the damn thing anyway (unless I was drunk while placing the order) another $400 for a measly 512 mb more seems outrageous.

That's interesting considering the Surface Pro 4 does use a slotted SSD:

Owner of SB 2 15" , could you please tell me the dimension of the "clipboard" ?
In all of the reviews (including reviews for SB1 and SBPB), the reviewers usually only mention the dimension of the whole laptop.

Interesting facts: SB1 /SBPB clipboard actually have the length & width of Lenovo Yoga 370 13".

Depends on the application. If I had a game running via Steam, it won't let me. It will ask that I close it down. Right now I have Visual Studio 2017, Chrome, Visual Studio Code, Slack, Steam (no game) running and it let me detach.

    Thank you for the answer.

By the way, did MS fix the "accidental power on" problem?
Just few minutes ago, I took my SBPB from my bag and it's hot. Turns out the laptop is turned on by accident (the power button got pressed inside the bag).
I googled and this is known problem of Surface Book.
