For what it's worth, I've had similar issues with my Surface Pro 2 in sunlight too, and that's a device with a fan. Just the combination of cranking up the brightness and the sunlight and external temperature have caused it to overheat in the past.

So, do I need a touchscreen as an external display? Will I be able to work on a document on the display while I use the pen and tablet to record my time or will I have to switch back and forth between the functions? Does what is being displayed on the tablet have to be echoed on the external display?

If you use it as a mirrored display then no you don't need touchscreen. What you do with the pen on the tablet will display the same on the other screen. BUT -- if you want to use it as a 2nd display to run different programs on different screens, then you will want touch if you want to be able to write from both locations. Is that what you are asking?

Yes. That's exactly what I'm asking. Whether or not I can perform completely separate functions on the tablet and the external display. I'm not crazy about using a mouse with W8, but if I didn't mind that, I guess I could get by with a mouse, KB and external display. But, I think a touch screen would work better.

I've used external displays in the past with a gaming notebook, but the larger display was just mirroring what the 3820TG was running. I've never used multiple displays with different functions on each.

I've had direct sunlight trip my iphone's temperature sensor in 60°F weather, I wasn't even using it.

It's interesting how much perceived attention the Surface line up is getting...
