a hands-on video (from the apple-fan-boys at the verge, even they dont find anything to complain ;))

Pretty much the device many people were waiting for.
The Price however is - ahem - quite high for an atom.

Looks at Vivo Tap 8 and Vaio Tap 11 - and has pretty similar ideas.

If my Vivotab 8 and my Vaio Tap would have a baby, it would be the Surface 3.

I'm actually sold on this. I'm an easy target as I want it all but, saying that, I don't play games on the Surface Pro 3 at all any more and it's basically a media/web browsing device like my iPad Air 2.

The only downside is the limit of 4Gb ram but that's what the pro's for.

Off to eBay I go to sell the Pro 3 and dock. The circle continues :)

P.s. Keeping an eye out for an MSI gaming machine now :)

    Curmudgeon here - I don't get it.

$599 for Atom/4gb/128gb. Assuming I at least have to have a keyboard, that brings it to $728. I shave a whole .38# off the big brother SPro 3; not much saving there. Then compare to the Asus ZenBook UX305 with Core M/8gb/256gb for $699, that's not looking too good from this viewpoint.

Had they brought in a near one pound devices, sub-0.3" fanless design, and a lower cost keyboard cover, maybe. BUt I just don't see what this down-sizing (particularly specs) really gives you over the low end big brother SPro 3.

It gives me nothing! Nothing I tell you... But it's shiny and I like it. Pre-order complete and on the way.

    AgggggggHhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh new things! :)

I, basically, have come to realise that although the Surface Pro 3 'is' a fantastic machine, I'm looking for something that's closer to the iPad Air 2. This has windows, no fan (not that a fan bothers me), the stylus which is a must and just enough power for me to do the random things that I do. Heavy tasks will be undertaken by the Quad core desktop with mega-gajulion rams and stuff.

What I'm trying to say is that I'm validating my obviously biased decision to purchase something new over common sense :)

Its no cheap device, i agree.
600€ for the smaller version, 720€ for the larger, add 50$ pen, 150€ keyboard and probably 100€ for umts/lte/wwlan/mobile data - and were close to 1000€.

The asus zenbook is a very nice device, and might have more power in the computing section, but it lacks digitizer & pen, runs much shorter on batteries, is heavier, has no backlit keyboard and doesnt work as tablet, has no lte/umts iirc, so its a bit apples and oranges.

    Well, several important advantages

    - much longer battery runtime (10 hours)
    - completly silent, no fan
    - 20-30% lighter & smaller
    - better 8MP camera (finally)
    - one doesnt need to carry the charger around, as it charges on standard usb
    - mobile data / wwlan / umts/lte, thats very important to many users (including me)

    hehehehe...

actually the surface 3 combines/mixes the advantages of the so far seperated cheaper baytrail atoms (as vivotap 8, dell venue pro etc) and of the haswell-y core i3/5/7 2-in-1s as vaio tap 11, surface pro 3 etc.

its light and fanless, rather like an atom, but has 4gb, usb3, the new z8-8700 quad 1,6/2,4 ghz, that power more like the i3/5/7s.

I'd say compared to the iPad it's very reasonably priced. It is a high quality device with great screen, metal body and amazing build quality.

I take this is not bay-trail atom? And is the USB port more like the Surface Pro 3 or Pro 2?
