My last few laptops were all Thinkpads, and I liked having the option of setting the maximum battery charge level. If you wanted to prolong the lifespan of the lithium ion batteries, you could set the computer to stop charging at 80%.

Is such a feature available (or necessary) on the ATIV Tablet? So far I've noticed that it always charges to 100% when the AC adapter is plugged in.

You can choose a power plan in some settings to set the maximum charge as 80% for the Smart PC Pro. I do this myself.

Is there any freeware utility that can do that?

Can you also do this on the Atom based ATIV?

In XE700T1C (Ativ pro) there is the setting you want in "settings" utility that Samsung provides (power management tab and there is 80% threshold check box).

I looked at the settings app on my 500T, and it only has 3 tabs: Network, Display, and Input. Nothing related to power management.

I figured that since the ATIV 500T does not have a user-replaceable battery, it might be a good idea to set the maximum charge level at 80-90% to prolong battery lifespan. With the 10+ hour battery life, even setting a threshold at 80-90% will still give excellent runtime while reducing battery aging.

    In 700T I have "General - Power Management - Network - Display - Soundalive - Input".
More options...the power management tab has what you need...
Chech if there is any update for the "utilities" utility in Samsung update.
Some months before (in January that I have bought it) I also didn't have this option...

Just checked, SW Update says my settings app is up to date, version 2.0.0.43.

I also looked in the BIOS (as one previous poster mentioned) and didn't see any options related to setting charge thresholds on the 500T.

2.0.0.43 here too, so it seems that the different Bios enables different options.
We have different tabs in our utilities app...
I have mine always charging till 80% because I have always connected external power to my dock (that is placed to my office) to preserve battery lifespan...
