Does anyone know of good OCR software? I want to take pictures of my textbooks and OCR it into pdf files so I won't have to carry my text books to class anymore and just store them on my tablet. Science textbooks are heavy!

The Abbyy one works really well. The Omnipage one, not as well.

I just wish the Abbyy program didn't cost $400.

Wow. OCR software is quite expensive. Then again, pretty much any professional level software is to a student. But they do seem to work well enough ( the trial version anyway).

The Omnipage had much more problems with character recognition than Abbyy. The Abbyy program seemed much more polished and accurate. Omnipage (as far as I could tell), did not have an option for correcting lines of texts that weren't completely horizontal on the photos.

BUT WAIT!!!! What if we need JAPANESE recognition?!

Are there by chance any Acrobat plugins or something like that floating around? I see several general OCR packages running around, oh, about $1000 or so. Anything afordable anyone has come across?

If you're a student your should check your school's bookstore's website. They'll usually have a software page where you should find a good discount on a lot of software.

Which they do. Unfortunately, asian language capable OCR software is rather rare, and they haven't got any.
