You definitely can, and that is preferred over using analog input since you avoid the analog-to-digital conversion process which can add unwanted noise and distortion to the signal. It's a spiffy S/PDIF on your receiver, right? Amazon has a bunch of USB-to-SPDIF adapters that can handle 24-bit, 96-KHz audio no problem that should serve your purpose well.

Yup, I don’t mind the “container” part, but needing to run stuff off the internet is a no-go for me, with extreme prejudice, until the far off day when high-speed cellular is ubiquitous even in the boondocks of the USA. I’ll likely not live that long.

    An aside...
About the futures that didn't come to be in the ream of the 7/8" inch Win devices with stylus,

The cancelled Surface Mini of 2014 that was supposedly ready to market (1), apparently 7" but looks closer to 8" to me, maybe because of what's supposed to be a 4/3 display (It's a not a 3:2, sure?), with a 3 positions kickstand (no silo), a hands-on by "Windows Central"

It was Windows RT but still good old Windows 8 (i'll miss you, Win8).

1/ Maybe there's still a bunch of old Surface Mini's buried somewhere in a desert to excavate one day

Treating symptoms and misidentifying the problem. Windows 8’s tablet UI should have stayed and not been nuked out of existence. Instead, they made the start menu the centerpiece of their UI and created a totally new tablet mode in Windows 10 that is an afterthought and shoehorned.

Man, all I see is just bezels. It probably was a good idea to cancel the product. It just didn't have anything novel to offer.
And boy are bezels quite ugly!
