They are rare, but there are a few devices out there that have an e-ink display and that support markup with a stylus. The e-ink display enables sunlight readability and offers exceptional battery life, at the cost of low refresh rates.

This thread is intended to have a central post with all models that we know about, running any OS (Android, custom, ..). There is another thread started by @Bronsky discussing Android e-ink tablets.

More details to be added, such as OS, resolution, screen size, connection options, etc.

    Recent devices
    Onyx Boox Max
Onyx Boox Max Carta (youtube, TPCR thread)
    Onyx Boox N96
    Sony Digital Paper DPT-S1 $800, 13.3" 4GB
Sony Digital Paper DPT-RP1 $700 weight: 349g / 12oz (TPCR thread, youtube, MR thread)
Good e-Reader - indiegogo project (link) - small quantities shipping?
    Hanvon WiseReader E920
    Hanvon E930
    Peacelevel Page X

    Unreleased
reMarkable - release date August 2017 (link)
    Onyx Boox Note

    Older models
    Irex Iliad
    Irex DR800
    Irex DR1000
    Hanvon N800
    PocketBook 903 Pro

Thanks to @Jmirko for adding a whole bunch of models.

People visiting this thread might also be interested in the mobileread forums which has threads covering many e-readers, with or without stylus support.

Onyx just showed the Onyx Boox Typewriter in Hong Kong, a 2-in-1 e-ink Android device.

I saw that, same guy as the video I linked for the Boox Max Carta. A typewriter that also inks, kind of wish I was a novelist now.

BTW you might have mentioned this elsewhere but do you have any thoughts on the as yet unreleased reMarkable? It looks good 'on paper', but I'm not sure how likely the company is to produce a reliable product. Even with the current 40% preorder discount it's a bit of a gamble.

I have my doubts and like the Sony it will be proprietary. I stay away from anything proprietary but I'll admit to being tempted by the new Sony. However, even for that device I won't open my purse until I've seen examples of rooted fully functional devices enabling me to add a Bluetooth keyboard or use it as a second screen to my iPad or Android tablet

I forgot all about this one. I once owned it. Not bad at all. It used a standard Wacom Penabled stylus. No silo; I stuck it on the top edge with Velcro.

You did a good job of capturing the major models, I was able to add some more obscure ones because this has been a hobby of mine since 2011. I find these devices quite fascinating, so I was glad to see your thread. Let's hope the prices come down so that more people can discover the advantages of using e-ink tablets for note-taking!

I agree, a fantastic device not only for 2010 when it came out, but even today. My wife still uses one and refuses to replace it with a more modern e-ink tablet.
