I've been talking about this for a while now. And I can totally see it happening inside 5 years. They will be replacing Macbooks with ARM SoCs first. Then Macbook Pros later as the software transition matures more along with iMacs and Mac Minis, then eventually Mac Pros way down the line.

I'm sure that as we type, Adobe and others are working on ARM versions of their professional software. As soon as major titles from major 3rd parties are good to go, Apple will pull the trigger.

Intel is most definitely ****ting in their collective pants right now. Not just because of market share loss that Apple computers going ARM represent, but the momentum keeps building away from X86/X64 and CISC with the likes of Windows on ARM as well.

Personally, after experiencing Clip Studio Paint running comparatively well against 15W Intel SoCs on an A10 iPad Pro, I knew that the transition is coming sooner than later. I think the ULV range will be an easy handle for Apple's A series SoCs. Their next challenge will be making them scale in core count and clockspeed well in order to take on Intel's 100+W desktop workstation chips.

For big CPUs, this exists already, there is the Qualcomm centric 2400 (already in 10 nm):

Outside of the X86 and ARM world, one superscalar risc CPU architecture definitely worth looking at is the IBM power 9:

Those are all contenders that could be used in future workstations one day...

I don't think they will be adding to their ARM license. They will stick with ARM based designs.
