I have a large number of TV shows and movies encoded in MP4, and as an iPad user I've been eagerly waiting for a good player for this format. I'm happy to say one is finally available, and it has a name that's familiar to many: VLC.

This app plays my MP4s without a hitch, and it has everyone's favorite price: free.

You transfer your video files through the iTunes desktop app, and no longer have to worry about the hassles of converting them before they play on Apple's tablet.

You can find VLC for the iPad on iTunes:
VLC Media Player for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad on the iTunes App Store

VLC is about to be withdrawn from the app store (google for the story) so download it while you can.

I have actually found CineXPlayer to be better then VLC in most situations. There is also another one called Buzz Player. I like CineXPlayer the best except it cannot play mkv files.

Unfortunately none of them can handle 720p movies or TV shows. I had a 720p mkv episode of the Walking Dead pilot and it played really slow, no artifacts just the video was too slow and out of sync with the audio.

VLC is still on the App Store as of today.

I had CineXPlayer installed for a long time, but it had trouble with the audio on my MP4 files. Not sure why.
