Intel must be drinking some very potent Kool-Aid to think TSMC and Samsung will just be standing still. Heck we screwed up but we will be on top in 3.5 years! Trust us we are Intel and
    we never ever fib;)

Intel has made some mistakes. They have ambitious plans, but at this point you can’t help wonder if it’s just another mistake in the works. There’s some disfunction there it seems. Good luck to them.

Western designers are always going to be on top in terms of inventiveness. (So long as the current crop of Authoritarians don't get us all killed).

The East is always going to be on top in terms of application. Nobody can take somebody else's genius idea and build it out like the Chinese.

I mean, "Western" that is. Japan invents some pretty cool stuff.

Remember the early Wacom clones? How the rip off shops kept doing idiotic things like putting cable ports in the bottom rather than along the side? Who does that? They could come up with a whole garage company which could actually go from idea to units shipped in less than a year, but they couldn't figure out how the end user might want to place their product on a desk? Yeah. Communism makes you weirdly vacant in certain ways. Probably you need to turn off parts of your brain just to cope.

The problem is that one of the latest and greatest inventions in the West was, "Hey! I know! Let's export all our labor to China! I'll be retired before those chickens come home to roost!"

Nice job! You time bombed your grand kids. Now instead of inventing cool things, they're out in the streets with useless degrees.

I guess we just have to invent some way to get our heads out of our arses. Hopefully that's still possible.

But I'll generally have faith in companies like Intel to stay smart. -Unless they have a woke culture now and are replenishing their office staff with forced diversity hires instead of merit hires. If that's the case, then the chips will certainly stop flowing. You can't mandate genius, but you can certainly punish it.

    Alder Lake's day has come...

Intel Architecture Day 2021: Alder Lake, Golden Cove, and Gracemont Detailed (anandtech.com)

Some of the biggest takeaways are:

    • Intel's Thread Director technology, in conjunction with Windows 11, "will load up one thread per P-core and all the E-cores before moving to the hyperthreads on the P-cores."
    • Performance (e.g. big) cores ("Golden Cove") have an 19% IPC improvement over Rocket Lake (and, by extension, roughly the same improvement over Ice Lake and Tiger Lake)
    • Efficiency (e.g. LITTLE) cores ("Gracement") have "+8% better than Skylake performance while consuming just over half the power" and "40% ST perf/power or 80% MT perf/power" improvement over Skylake
    • AVX-512 is fused off and disabled in consumer products [personal note: they actually listened to Linus Torvalds!]
    • Desktop has an up-to 8+8 core design, mobile 6+8, and ultra mobile 2+8, as illustrated below:
