One hint for new users - don't try to use the pen during the initial Window setup. The default mode is combined touch and pen which makes the pen (to me) almost unusable. Selecting things or using the onscreen keyboard was very difficult.

I would have tried hooking up a keyboard and mouse to the dock or just using touch if I'd known.

Here's my preferred settings for using Windows 7 on a tablet.

    • Control Panel -> Display. Medium 125%. This makes buttons and text a little bigger on small screens.
    • Control Panel -> Taskbar and Start Menu. Use small icons. The small icons scaled up to 125% are plenty big enough.
    • Control Panel -> Location and Other Sensors. Hopefully the gsensor auto rotation can be disabled here. I hate it on my phone.
    • Programs -> Accessories-> Windows Mobility Center. Pin to Taskbar. I like having this handy to manually adjust screen brightness (auto adjustments drive me batty), screen rotation, wifi, etc.
    • Control Panel -> Pen and Touch
      • Pen Options -> Start Tablet PC Input Panel -> Settings -> Enable start Input Panel gesture. The HP Slate has a hardware button for this, but if you have pen in hand, I think this is more convenient.
      • Flicks -> Customize. I prefer to bind the up and down flick to the Page Down and Page Up keys (the procedure is tricky) because some programs don't respond to the Scroll actions.
      • Touch -> Touch pointer -> Show the touch pointer when I'm interacting with items on the screen. This gives you an on-screen transparent mouse when you use touch that makes it possible to hover and easier to hit small buttons. If you miss the small button on first try, the mouse shows up and you can position the pointer with precision and get it the second try. Use a flick of the virtual mouse to move the pointer to another corner relative to the mouse. Windows Vista had a taskbar button to turn it on and off, but in Windows 7, you just have to leave it on all the time.
    • Tablet PC Settings -> Other -> Goto Input Panel Settings
      • Opening -> Disable Use the Input Panel Tab. It mostly just gets in the way. The hardware button or gesture are more convenient.
      • Opening -> Show button on the taskbar. Not really needed on the HP Slate since you have the hardware button, but I find it useful on my convertible.

I didn't know about the restore media. Thanks for that.

I ordered the restore media today and they say it will take 7 weeks.:(

The funny thing is they asked if I wanted to upgrade the shipping to second day once it was in stock and I laughed. If I'm waiting 7 weeks, will a couple of days make any difference?

    Bronsky,

The CD restore solution just passed a critical pre-production checkpoint last night and will be available shortly, hence the lead time you were quoted. Looks like others have shared the USB solution, as noted below, so no need to repeat that. If you have an urgent need for restore, send me an offline message and we can work to get you a solution ASAP.

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR EARLY SLATE CUSTOMERS WHO DID NOT GET RESTORE MEDIA WITH THEIR PRODUCTS:

You will need to upgrade to the latest BIOS in order to boot from the CD restore media when you get it. Units that ship in the future with the media will already have the latest BIOS.

    Regards,

    HPCustExp

That's what I thought when I first ordered the Slate 500. Now that we are pushing against Christmas, I wish I had done overnight. I asked about changing my shipping, but the rep says they cannot change the shipping method of an existing order. :-(

I just checked HP's site and did not see a new BIOS version. Am I missing something?

They are going to ship it as a separate product... ETA unknown but by sometime in 2011... maybe. :)

I'm guessing it is not ready yet.
