Does the Venue 8 Pro only charge with its own USB cable?

I've tried using the micro USB cable that came with my Xbox One controller and it won't charge this device, even when plugged into its own charger.

No, the DV8p doesn't not require a special cable.

It will charge fine from its own charger when using most standard cables. I say "most" since it is quite possible for some cables to use rather small gauge wire that, due to its resistance, causes too much of a voltage drop to allow the DV8p to "agree" to begin charging.

I haven't tried many cables, but the charge/data cable that came with my Kindle Keyboard works fine with my DV8p even when used with a 9' (~3m) USB Extension cable.

As I understand it, the wiring in the charging apparatus for the DV8P has to be set up in a special way (some other devices have this as well). Dell has done this within the original Dell charger, and so any USB cable should work with it, to charge the DV8P. I've had no issue in using various generic USB cables with the Dell charger, to charge the DV8P.

A nice alternative to the Dell charger: the Blackberry Playbook charger, which will work with the DV8P and currently can be found for around only $3.50 shipped. And its cable (permanently fixed to the charger unit) is a nice 6'5" or so (compared to the Dell charger's 3'). http://forum.tabletpcreview.com/del...de-charger-currently-around-3-50-shipped.html

Having the USB data lines shorted is the key to charging the V8P. This requirement conforms to the "dumb" USB fast charging specification. Additionally, it is necessary to use a charger that will deliver > 1.5A. The data lines are shorted inside of the supplied Dell clarger as Mikerman notes. To use a generic 2A charger, get a cable like this with the lines shorted inside of the cable,

Amazon.com: PortaPow Specialised 5ft 24AWG Charge Only Micro USB Cable for Blackberry, Xperia, HTC One, Google Nexus, Other Fast Charging Devices: Electronics

I have this cable and it works with all 2A chargers I have tried.

I've charged mine on a wide variety ofgeneric blocks and cables. Obviously some charge faster than others, but I've not had any problems.

Damage to the USB cable pins is the most common cause for this sort of issue. .... We have only seen this (battery not charging) occur on a few systems ... So, for anyone having trouble charging their Venue 8 Pro, definitely try using ...

Due to the cable's short length, I immediately grabbed the USB cable that was provided with my Lumia 1020. No Dice. Then I tried the charging cable that came with my Xbox ONE. No dice. So.... I ended up grabbing a USB extension cable at Fry's. Works like a charm.

Also to note: After getting that to work, I tried having the cables plugged directly into the USB port on my surge protector. That didn't work at all. So I make sure to keep the dell usb power brick and the cables together at all times.

The DV8P and its original charger have worked with various generic, inexpensive (under $2) cables that I have around.
