I haven't received a replacement either. Had my initial one in November.

I received replacement pens without contacting Dell. I did purchase the originals directly from Dell's website, not from the Microsoft store or anywhere else.

The stylus should come on automatically when you first touch/press its tip to the tablet. And it will automatically turn off after a small period of no further input/stimulation. When on, the stylus should result in screen icons being highlighted when the stylus hovers (without touching) over them.

The buttons depend on the software and whether it uses them. In some programs, one button (I forget which) will activate an erase feature. Within Windows, one of the buttons (the top?) will result in a right click when the tablet screen is touched.

Hope this helps, as a start.

Yes I got mine from dell directly (after the well documented delays?) as well. Maybe its for Americans only, I'm in the UK.

Also try Control Panel - Tablet PC Settings, Display tab, Setup button. Select 'Pen input' and tap the screen with the pen.

thanks and tried it, it doesn't do anything, when I got to the "tap the screen with the pen" I had to restart the computer as I had no way of getting out of that screen as it wouldn't let me bring up the keyboard to press enter.

I guess its a phone call to Dell.

follow up, I contacted Dell and they did various checks and downloads but in the end they are going to send me a new stylus. It did take a while to get to talk to someone but was doing other stuff while I waited. I found them very good and thorough in trying to solve the problem and give me a case number just in case anything further occurred. So would rate their customer service a B+ from my own experience.
