Edit: I fixed the problem. Here's what I did:

    1. Go into device manager
    2. Find the entry for "Generic monitor" (i think it's under "monitors")
    3. Right click it, click "update driver"
    4. Windows should replace the monitor with "Generic PnP Monitor"
    5. The brightness now works!

    Hey all,

I reinstalled Vista a while ago, but ever since then, I haven't been able to change the brightness of my display; Windows Mobility Center doesn't have a tile for it, and the fn key combinations don't do anything.

Does anyone know of a way to fix it, or am I stuck on maximum brightness forever?

I think my laptop is cursed, I was just browsing the forums, and then tried to adjust brightness and have the exact same issue, tile is gone, FN+ F7/F8 buttons doesnt work. I had this happen before, it went away after I reboot. I also have the same issue w/ the synaptic drivers and scrolling on the right side of the touchpad. Both issues are present in 32bit and 64bit vista. :(

try this... go to the HP support site and download the Quick Launch buttons... this is NOT quickplay, this is just the mobility center, rotate, and function keys package. I could be wrong, but c:/program files/hewlett-packard/hp quick launch buttons/ seems to contain a lot of vital files on fn keys and bezel buttons and has even the old compaq menus thrown in there for your use if you really miss them from the old TC series.

here's the link... just try it and make sure you have it all... no reason to not have it from what I can see:

    32 bit: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...&dlc=en&cc=us&product=3744020&os=2093&lang=en

64-bit (don't know if this is different, but whatever)

Ah, yeah, I just tried installing that. It did fix the Mobility Center and Screen Rotate buttons, but still no brightness... :-\

    Hey all,

I figured out how to fix the problem! (At least on my computer).

    1. Go into device manager
    2. Find the entry for "Generic monitor" (i think it's under "monitors")
    3. Right click it, click "update driver"
    4. Windows should replace the monitor with "Generic PnP Monitor"

And that's it! The brightness will work again, at least if your problem was the same as mine.
