The only real drawback I see compared to older Note phones is that the curved edges while beautiful to see reduces the actual portion of screen you can use to write.

Personally, I do the majority of my notetaking putting the phone in landscape anyway.

Sadly, I would replace "sometimes" in your statement with "often." Having worked inside big tech corporations over years past I can tell you that it is a classic case of "groupthink" driven by the need to do something "new" and "different" than had been done by the product before, even if objectively it makes the product worse. Often the best you can hope for is an "all new" feature, which is virtually unchanged, but is clothed in a new UX, to satisfy the marketers!

They'll have to come up with a 7"+ all screen phone for me to consider inking on it. Gave up after the note 3.

Inking on something like the iPhone X would be cool for me: I saw it yesterday for the first time and I loved how large the screen is in such a relatively small footprint. :)

If you're looking for more reason to be excited about the existence of a Surface Phone or whatever... Microsoft's Messaging app is currently completely useless. It'll download messages from a Windows phone synced to your account, but it can only send messages on a device with built-in LTE... and yet for some reason they just added inking functionality to it.

Typically the LTE capability built into PCs is data-only and doesn't allow for MMS, but that's a possibility too.
