I know what you mean. It's tempting to engage in ridiculous hyperbole, but I think a significant corner has been turned.

Some seriously heavy apps, and seriously light requirements.

A lot of things came together this last year. So for this segment, your not left wanting, and they will only improve.

With the cost of licensing Windows now 0 for devices under 9" hopefully you are correct and we will see real improvements.

How hard was it to pry off the case?

Well, firstly set your oven to 450*F.
Let it warm up for 10 to 15 minutes.
    Then grab 2 metal spudgers.
DO NOT put the spudgers in the oven. ( if you do, you will burn your hands )
Working CAREFULLY around the perimeter of the Note 8, insert the spudgers between the back plastic cover and the main body, no more than 2 to 3 mm deep.
Gently now, employ a slight prying motion, while sliding the spudgers along the perimeter.
As you do this, you will hear one of two possible sounds.
If you hear a soft clicking sound, congratulations, you are disengaging the plastic click-lock tabs around the entire perimeter. There are about 10 or so.
If however, you hear a louder snapping sound, that is an indication that you are not cut out to perform acts of nimble dexterity.
The trick is to disengage ALL the click-lock tabs, before trying to lift the back off.

Step 2. Put the cookie dough in the oven, bake for 10 minutes, and then either, reward yourself for having successfully cracked open your tablet, or console yourself after having destroyed your tablet case!!

PS. Don't put the tablet in the oven, or the spudgers, the oven is only for the cookie dough.

First interior pic I've seen, I've been searching for a teardown for ages with no joy. Is the eMMC soldered to the mainboard?

    Cheers,
    Alex

Lol. And here I was wondering how Asus designed the unit to withstand 450 degree heat. Hope the cookies were good.

    Dear Rodney:

I followed your instructions as listed above:

    1) My oven does not go to 450 degrees, so I just set it on broil.

    2) I let it heat for 7 1/2 minutes, as broil is a little warmer than 450.
(I did not want it to get too hot)

    3) You did not state how long to leave the unit in the oven,
nor did you say face up or face down.
(I placed it face down on a clean sheet of foil)

    4) I do not know what a 'slunger' is, so I used a tooth extraction
elevator that I swiped from the Dentist the last time
    I had a tooth pulled.

    5) It took me about 21 minutes to find the extractor, so the computer
was in the oven for a little longer than I intended on leaving it.
(I now have a cool bubbly-like texture to the back cover.

    6) I did not really have to work carefully while removing the cover,
as the case had conveniently shrunk away from the screen.

    7) I heard no discernable clicks, not 10 as per instructions
but just one "crack-like sound". It sounded more glass-like than plasticy.
    Do you think that matters?

    8) I did not have any cookie dough in the house, but that
squirrel that has been raiding the birdfeeder....

    9) Oops!
I did not see the last line of your instructions in my
excitement to get started with this cool Do-It-Yourself Home computer internet repair

Do you think it will matter if I have to send my Tablet
back to Asus for Warrenty Repair?

Me too. The only thing I don't quite get is the squirrel /bird feeder thing but I'm thinking I may be better off not knowing :D.
