I could no longer resist, so I cracked my slate open.

Looks like normal laptop SODIMM, large battery on the left, and possibly the SSD in the upper left under the foil.

    I'm sorry I didn't have better lighting.

Props for taking the chance, how difficult was it to open? Looks pretty clean inside in terms of being well put together.

I just got mine a couple of hours aga and am charging it up for now, Need to finish up some work

This device, just the build quality and the feel of it is very nice, I'm impressed already and I haven't even turned it on yet :D

Yes, this slate is built like a tank. The back is a very tight fit. I started on the side opposite the pen holder and slid a knife blade in the edge along the aluminum band. Then working out to both corners. Then I worked my way around, being careful to not let the back fall away from the body as I saw the foil strip connecting the RF shield on the back to the body.

Putting it back together was just about as difficult as it it hard to get one whole side to stay snapped in while you work the other edges.

Is anything replaceable? It looks like the RAM might be, and what about that thing in the upper left? That's not the SSD, is it?

Mine was shipped from Microsoft but while they were supposed to ship via overnight, they screwed up yet again (don't ask) and shipping ground instead. They messed up so much, I'm surprised.

    Looking forward to UPS coming!

Wow JustDavid, you are rather brave. I winced when I read the title. But yeah it does seem like that the slate could be upgradeable.. which is great news!

In looking at the design, and seeing absolutely no screws anywhere, I knew the back had to be pressed/snapped on. After that, it was just a matter of getting up the nerve to slide a knife blade in.
