i made a recovery stick with the dell soft before upgrading the ssd and installing win 10 straight to it

now i would like going back to 8.1, but the usb drive does not boot. error "windows could not be started"
is this a known problem? any way to fix it? or will i need to put the 64gb ssd back in again and redo it?

I would guess it was a bad image on the storage unit you are using. I would try to create the recovery media again.
Another option is to download the Windows 8.1 ISO from Microsoft and see if that will install (I believe the 7140 has the Windows key on the BIOS).

yeah installing stock 8.1 is no problem, but some of the stuff is missing
like the dell specific powerplans which are not avaiable for download...
