Yeah, the unit I bought came with an external drive. The drive itself is the original that Sony originally sold for the unit (the drive is a bit unusual in that it uses a firewire instead of a traditional USB interface... don't know why Sony decided to go that route, perhaps something to do with Sony's involvement in the development of the interface). I understand that the UX series can be a little bit fickle when it comes to booting OS installations from external drives so I'm glad I got this one.
