Boot from USB? 500t

That is the boot from usb option. There is no direct option during boot up to choose which device youd like to boot from and no way to change priority. You have to boot up W8 first then choose boot from usb which restarts the unit set to boot from that particular usb device. Its retarded, I know...

To make matters worse, it seems nothing else wants to boot from usb aside from windows and fedora, but fedora just throws an error 15 if u actually try to do anything. Everything else just boots up W8 as if their wasnt a usb device inplace.

Yes there is. During boot press F10 (or F9, I don't remember exactly which one right now).

Its F10, odd. Never worked for me before. Thanks for the heads up. I tried everything before and couldnt get it to work right.
Oddly enough however, it doesnt always seem to want to show my usb devices as present. Sometimes it lists them and some times it doesnt.

Same here. No success booting into a bootable USB stick with True Image 2013. or "Windows 8 recovery USB stick" on Samsung Ativ 500T.

The stick boots perfectly fine with my other laptop (Fujitsu T901). Here I can specifically select to boot from USB in BIOS. This option is missing in the Samsung Ativ 500T Bios which is a shame and the reason for our problems.

- When pressing F2 while booting it doesn't show my USB stick within bios last tab "Boot Override"

- When pressing F10 while booting it doesn't show my USB stick within the blue box coming up "Please select boot device", only 1 entry "Enter Setup", no USB stick shown in bios last tab "Boot Override"

- Choosing "Advanced boot" in Windows 8, restarting, selecting "Use a device", selecting my USB stick, nothing but a restart happens

Switching off "Secure boot" in BIOS doesnt help.


The even bigger problem: booting from a Windows 8 system recovery USB stick created within Windows 8 (the one on the machine) doesn't boot either! So if you delete the win8 recovery partition on the hard-drive then you cannot do a recovery at all.

Samsung must add the option to boot from USB. I will keep annoying the Samsung support. The more users talk to support about that the better.

Wait. So it's not possible to reinstall Windows from scratch? I just got mine back from repair and want to get rid of everything on it, and do a clean installation from my own Windows 8 stick. I do not want all the bloat Samsung left in there. :(

Well I've tried that. Unfortunately it never boots from USB. I had a Windows 8 Pro install DVD in a USB DVD drive. It would never boot from it. So I'm not even getting as far as it seems like most of you guys are getting. Not sure why.

Yeah pls check first if you can boot from USB first. I cant :(
So deleting the recovery partition would end up in not being able to install Windows.

Microsoft and the hardware producers are convinced that users should be happy with the recovery partition solution. But this solution is a bad one! It takes 6gb of the limited hard disc space and in our case you cannot even delete it as you depend on it.

I am sure that Samsung will fix the USB boot issue for the Ativ devices IF we all contact support about that.

Thanks for sharing! Thats really bad and confirms our experience with USB boot. This is definitely broken by the BIOS. I can boot all my USB boot sticks (Windows 8 recovery stick, WinPE 3.0, etc.) on my other laptops and PC but it is completely impossible on the Ativ 500.

I tried every single option to make it work. I does not work.

Samsung must fix that. Shouldn't be too hard - USB boot is kind of established ;)

Just to be sure I'm doing this right or wrong...

I go into Settings, Change PC Settings, General, Advance Settings, Restart Now.
That takes me a light blue screen that says "Choose an option". I have 3 choices, Continue, Troubleshoot, Turn off your PC.
If I click Continue, the tablet just reboots back into Windows 8.
Troubleshooting has various options for resetting my PC, opening a command prompt, system restore. There is a "Start up Settings" in Advanced Options under Troubleshooting, but that just takes me to Windows 8's version of Safe Mode.

Those of you that get the option to boot from USB, can you be more specific in how you are getting to it. And did you change any BIOS settings to enable it?

What I can achieve is that I see the USB stick in BIOS (last tab under boot override). When selecting I see a blue screen for 1 second and then get back to the BIOS page. So nothing really happens.

When doing the Windows boot solution you described I can see the option "Use a device" as shown here (when my USB stick is plugged in): http://blog.laptopmag.com/wpress/wp-...-boot-menu.jpg

But same here: Nothing really happens - it restarts without executing the USB boot stick...

Switching secure boot on or off in BIOS doesn't change anything.
