Default News - Panasonic Intros 3 New Toughbooks, Dell Wants To Get "Tough" Too, Fujitsu P1610 Ready For Its Closeup

    Panasonic Intros 3 New Toughbooks

Panasonic introduced the next generation of its Toughbook lineup yesterday branded as "Business-Rugged." The models span the spectrum with the Toughbook W5, an ultraportable notebook for the mobile professional, the Toughbook Y5 a lightweight desktop replacement notebook, and the Toughbook T5 billed as a "Tablet PC alternative with extremely long battery life." The Toughbook T5 sports a 12.1 inch touch-screen, a durable frame, and an ergonomic handstrap. The T5 weighs in at only 3.5 pounds and is equipped with an ultra-low voltage processor for extended battery life. All the models feature magnesium alloy cases, flexible internal connectors, shock-mounted hard drives, and embedded 3G wireless technology.

Dell Wants To Get "Tough" Too

Perhaps taking a cue from Panasonic's success with its Toughbook lineup, Dell has decided that its customers might also want more rugged portable machines. At a recent Technology Day in New York, Alex Gruzen, General Manager of Dell's Product Group stated that Dell had been exploring the possibility of expanding their mobile lineup with a "rugged" notebook model and a Tablet PC.

"I think we could expand the whole [rugged notebook] market," Gruzen said in an interview with eWEEK in New York. Read more...

That's pretty cool. The new P1610 Tablet PC has a palm rejection technology. Is that just software based?

Does anyone know if a touch screen and even the P1610's touch screen is pressure sensitive?

Has Fujitsu said when the P1610 would be available in the United States?

Is the new T5 a touchscreen only or is it a real tablet? It's pretty damn light, would be cool if it were a tablet.

    Spare Tire,

The Panasonic ToughBook 5 is a touchscreen only notebook; it is not a tablet PC, as it does not have the Tablet PC operating sytem, instead Windows XP Professional, but it is pretty close. And it's lightweight too!
