A true comparison of a clean install vs lenovo install
@ Variable, Dolvich et al,
I have just recently received my x60 tablet. Other than uninstalling norton, I am using the factory install. I have the L7400 1.50 GHz, 2 GB ram and the 80 GB 5400 HD and Vista Business. Here are my results from Crystal mark:
Mark: 44254
ALU: 12952
FPU: 13377
MEM: 8851
HDD: 3629
GDI 2371
D2D: 2345
OGL: 729
This was done under less than ideal circumstances. As I am interested in doing a clean install, I am interested in giving some more illuminating results for my own and others comparisons.
My plan is to catalog the various trials of obtaining different system configurations and post the corresponding results from crystalmark.
I will post the results in this thread, hopefully within this calendar week. This prepost tease is to ask anyone else out there to join me and post their crystalmark results here. Especially those who are about to do a reinstall so they can give us a comparison.
I also welcome any thoughts and advice concerning all of this
***Important***
If you do a clean install, BEFORE you kill you factory install make sure you get the key that came installed from the factory (NOT the one on the sticker) so you can do an offline activation, otherwise you'll have to do a phone activation. Remember to thank Microsoft for making it more difficult for legitimate owners to install their OS than it is for theives.Last edited by bodo; 06-20-2007 at 05:37 AM. Reason: note about key

Congrats on your new tablet and thank you for doing this! It'll be interesting to see the results. One question regarding Crystalmark... Is there much variation in the results? In other words, if you were to run this test multiple times with the same config, will you always get same results?

Re: A true comparison of a clean install vs lenovo install
Reposting from other threat
I found some interesting benchmarks which clearly demonstrate the "crappyness" of the Lenovo installation vs. a clean install:
The X61 with WWAN configured (Lenovo install & lenovo drivers)

X61 with Intel Turbo (Lenovo install & lenovo drivers)

X60 with Lenovo installation (Lenovo install & lenovo drivers)

Lenovo x60 with clean install
CPU: Core 2 Duo L7400
RAM: 3GB
HDD: 7,200rpm
OS: Vista Premium Biz
The Score
Mark: 50040
ALU: 13186
FPU: 13872
MEM: 9174
HDD: 5736
GDI: 5041
D2D: 2286
OGL: 745
Interestingly I beat both x61 systems on GDI, D2D and OGL.
And the x61 without Turbo Memory on Mark and HDD too!
I would love to see more people post their scores here, especially cleaninstall vs. lenovo installation. I used Crystalmark which is free and does not require any installation (very nice!).
If anyone has an x61, I would very much like to see a benchmark with a clean install or at least with the newest drivers installed. The new drivers for the x3100 apparently start utilizing the GPU better ... which is currently getting beaten by my GMA950.
(Sadly the GBM people do not get what crapware and Lenovo's old drivers do to their systems and they insist on running the Lenovo installation. So much for actually "testing" their review units.)

BTW seems clean install vs. removal of craplets is still approx. 10% in favor of clean.

Re: A true comparison of a clean install vs lenovo install
Ran the test again:
Mark: 50403
ALU: 13240
FPU: 13953
MEM: 9113
HDD: 6016
GDI: 5030
D2D: 2313
OGL: 738
I would say the results are pretty close.
Both times, I was also running other apps in the background.
Would really like to see more results.
Especially some x61 tablets with the new drivers installed which supposedly support the chipset/integrated graphics better.

Re: A true comparison of a clean install vs lenovo install
Yeah. Except for reviewers ... and the GBM do not seem to have a clue about technology (they probably also don't want to offend Lenovo which seems to be giving them the VIP treatment).
Maybe Tiffany can jump in the breach and offer us a benchmark with the new intel drivers.
Otherwise, I am very disappointed with the x61 vs. the x60.
PS: Also still looking for someone willing and able to try the intel Turbo Memory in an older laptop/tablet.
It is possible to install the Turbo Memory in the x60 as an example (as long as you do not have WWAN) ... but can Vista use it?

Re: A true comparison of a clean install vs lenovo install
Since the benchmarks are close and in some cases x60 wins, the other reason I was considering the x61 was the improved battery life, I wonder if this was the new battery stretch software lenovo put on the x61? If so maybe this can be used on the x60? Also I'm wondering if doing a clean install would take away that extra battery stretch that the x61 can claim over the x60

Re: A true comparison of a clean install vs lenovo install
For the people running a clean install when they get there X61, make sure to post how you performed this. I'm wondering how or if the Intel Turbo Memory will get affected.
I know there are threads discussing the various methods of clean installs but I was wondering if there were differences in how it's performed on an X61 vs. X60.
Thanks.
