Can't decide if I should buy X61t with MultiTouch or better resolution
Hello,
I am posting this here because I know I want the X61t, I'm just not sure what display to get.
Here are the options currently available.
12.1" MultiView WVA SXGA TFT
12.1" MultiView + MultiTouch WVA XGA TFT
I am leaning towards MultiTouch but 1024x768 just seems so outdated to me. However, I think that I really need the touchscreen option. My primary usage is for internet poker. I tested out the HP TX1000 and found the touchscreen to be really useful. I could carry it around the house in tablet mode and get stuff done while playing because I could just simply tap the screen when I had to do anything.
I returned the HP because the AMD processor was subpar.
So now that the X61t is available with Santa Rosa, I am ready to buy.
The biggest question I guess is, if I go with the SXGA can I use the tablet with my fingernail just to press buttons during a game? Or, do I have to get the pen out to do anything with the tablet functionality?
If I can use fingernails, then it makes sense to go with the higher resolution. If this is not possible then I know I must get the MultiTouch.
Also, do we know when the SXGA+ will be available again.
Thanks for your help in advance

Ummm.... fingernails probably won't cut it. If using touchscreen internet poker is your primary concern for getting a tablet, get the multitouch without hesitation. 1024x768 might even make the experience more enjoyable because the icons, tool bars, etc. are larger.

I'm pretty sure you need to use the pen for the SXGA.

I didn't think touch screen was such a big deal, hence my choice to go with higher resolution (SXGA+) instead of Multitouch. So you can use your finger to click, select, and drag instead of using stylus.. what's the big deal?

Re: Can't decide if I should buy X61t with MultiTouch or better resolution
Hi all,
Just to clarify a few things:
The MultiTouch option (being able to use the pen and your fingers to interact with the screen) is available only for the XGA screen, there is not a MultiTouch option for the SXGA+ screen. Hence the XGA + MultiTouch has both an active (Wacom) digitizer and a passive (touchscreen) digitizer.
The SXGA+ screen option does not allow one to use fingernails, or any other object for that matter, but only the stylus pen included will work. Hence the SXGA+ screen option only has an active (Wacom) digitizer.
MultiView or SuperView is concerning the viewing angle and outdoor/indoor readability of the display in either environments.

Just to add strength to Chris's post above, the SXGA+ option is indeed only a pen option.
No finger option available.

Re: Can't decide if I should buy X61t with MultiTouch or better resolution
I chose the multitouch over the higher res for a number of reasons. First, I was a bit concerned that the higher res might make things a bit too small for me especially on a 12.1 inch screen.
2nd, I felt that the touchscreen will be handy especially with the pointerstick. While I can use it fairly proficiently now, I can envision plenty of circumstances where I won't want to be fiddling with a stylus but still want to manipulate the screen via the touch interface. For example, surfing the web right now and writing this post. I wouldn't be doing any inking (I type faster than I write) so I wouldn't want the stylus out, and being able to navigate webpages by just touching the screen would be pretty neat I think.

I felt the exact same way. Also, I despise the idea of finger prints all over the screen.
I'm guessing you don't like the idea of typing and keeping your hands in the same place?
If I'm in laptop mode my fingers are rested on the keyboard employing (what I believe) a useful touchstick mouse. While in tablet mode, I use the pen anyways, so there's no inclination to stash it.
As far as the screen resolution, I think my eyes are suitable for a crisper display while sacrificing smaller objects (knock on wood). If I was 60 years old... that would be a different story.

Re: Can't decide if I should buy X61t with MultiTouch or better resolution
For 90% of my websurfing, I'm clicking on links as opposed to typing. I spend far more time moving the mouse pointer around than I do typing. For most applications where I am typing, I mainly just use the keyboard and keyboard shortcuts. There isn't much type, use mouse, type, use mouse for me.
I'm also perpetually losing my pens so minimizing the time I am forced to use a stylus is a good thing for me.

Re: Can't decide if I should buy X61t with MultiTouch or better resolution
Hello all...thanks for all the input and clarifications.
After much thought, I need screen real estate more than I need to touch the screen. The pen should be enough. I will call tomorrow to switch to the SXGA+. The site says SXGA is the only other option but I think i read somewhere that it was a typo.
I appreciate you all taking the time to help.
