    Default AFFS vs IPS

Has anyone compared these screens? I want to upgrade my x201t for the display port capability and battery benefits. My screen is HV121WX6-110 . I really don't want to downgrade my screen.

If anything, I think you'd already be getting a downgrade on resolution alone. 1366x768 is going to be REALLY narrow in portrait orientation relative to 1280x800, which is already a bit narrow as is. (That ONE thing is enough to make me swear off the X220t, though I'm still more than willing to recommend the X200t or X201t to anyone looking for a Tablet PC.)

Outdoor viewability may not as be good, either; part of what makes AFFS+ so great is not just the ludicrously good viewing angles, but I've also found that my 2730p (yes, this one has AFFS+) is quite viewable in outdoor lighting conditions without having to crank the brightness all the way up (which means longer battery life), and this is the "indoor" panel option!

Still, I'll have to find an X220(t) in person before I can make a fair comparison. Even photos and videos can't quite capture things the way your own two eyes would.

both the resolutions are pretty close to each other. 84,628 for x201 and 83,927 for the x220 per inch. I welcome the widescreen so i can work on more things at the same time, and toolbars. albeit I'm a pixel density nut and there's a 650 pixel loss per sq inch. May not be much. The text in ubuntu on this machine is awesome. So i installed gdipp on win7 and it works well. But I can't get through one lecture with brightness down and radios off before the battery dies on this machine.
I have an IPS HP ZR22w monitor, but I think the x201 screen is better.

    OchoZero9,

I'm assuming your talking about the real life comparison, not the technical breakdown of the differences between the two. I wish somebody can do this as well. This has been a good debate by various members on this forum. And a side by side comparsion would settle it once and for all.

I would be interested in this as well.

There is no settling that needs to be done. IPS is inferior to AFFS+ screens for tablets and notebooks.

Your assumption is correct, as I pointed out the pixel density is pretty similar.

    OchoZero9,

Let's assume that the AFFS display technology is indeed superior compared to IPS for the sake of argument. But if you want DisplayPort connectivity, the HP 27xx is out of the question. You really don't have any other option except for X220T.

Otherwise, just stay with your X201T....not much options for tablet PC.

The docking station for the 27xx line has displayport. It's not that inconvenient..

Do you know if the DisplayPort output on the dock carries audio?

My X200t had the Hydis AFFS+ and I now have the X220i with the IPS screen, which I believe is made by LG, though it is not the tablet. I couldn't do a direct comparison as I sold my X200t over a month ago and I've had my X220i just short of a week. As far as the screens go, I'd say both are very good. I wouldn't one's significantly better than the other. I wouldn't let screen quality be the deciding factor. I think the LG is slightly more color accurate. The Hydis looks slightly better at lower brightness levels. The biggest down side in terms of a tablet is if you plan to use it in portrait mode, where the loss of the 32 vertical pixel is notable. The plus for me in terms of the screen is I wasn't really using the tablet part very much. With my X220i, I don't have the associated grain that comes with a tablet, but you'll get that with any tablet screen.

Other pros and cons for a X220t would be the better performance. I can watch Blu-ray rips in low power mode on my i3 whereas I had to kick it into adaptive CPU to get it to play smoothly. You get the option of two hard drives with the mSATA drive if you don't need WWAN. The biggest con is probably the fan noise. There's no low power CPU options on the X220T and it can get a bit noisy. Lenovo is about ready to release a BIOS update. I've been using it for a a bit and it helps, but the machine does run warmer.
