Re: Alternatives
I had those same feelings about the new Asus tablet, but then I sat back down again and got serious. It is only .4" thinner than my 2730p, so I reminded myself the Slate is my yellow pad and travel companion, not my workhorse. I have no doubt that someday we will have a Slate size device, half as thick, and runs 24 hours (I can dream) and it will be my sole computer. For now, I'm thrilled with the Slate so long as I don't go trying to edit Lawrence of Arabia.

Re: Alternatives
The Asus EP121 looks good and doesn't weigh much. I like 10" sizes better, though. The idea of including a Bluetooth keyboard is good, but I'd much rather have the keyboard to be part of the device. Seems like a good alternative, though. Price is good for the speed you get. How's building quality? So far, this is the best alternative to the Slate 500, in my opinion. That at 10" would be great.
The Samsung Sliding tablet looks good too. Just 2 pounds. Slower processor though...And it seems to be Pen-less.

How long till someone resurrects the TC-1100 form factor? I like slates, but sometimes I need a physical keyboard, and I'd rather have it attached to the slate when travelling, then detached again when not needed. Maybe someone could make the keyboard be part of the folio so when you need to do heavy typing, you put the slate into the folio.

Re: Alternatives
The closest thing I have seen to something like similar is the Lenovo WePad or whatever they call it. It is actually 2 computers where the screen is a low power LeOS or something. It does not have pen input though.
I will tell you one thing, in the 10.1" size and in convertible format the 3 lb Lifebook T580 with a core I3 or I5 still looks to be a smart TabletPC. All the CES announcements so far (with exception of the EP121) are less powerful. Smaller and lighter than a 2740P but capable of running just about any Win program around, it would make for a good single computer.regards,
Dan

Re: Alternatives
Correct, and it scores a 5.8 on the CPU with the Windows Experience Index. Pre-ordered mine last night on Amazon. But as others have pointed out, I think the EP121 and Slate don't really match up well. The EP121 will wipe the floor with the Slate in terms of performance but the Slate looks to have much better battery life and is a full pound lighter. For on the go the Slate wins. For performance the EP121 is clearly the winner. And if you need a Wacom pen then there is no choice but I do find the Slate to be a great note taker, that would be the device I'd take to a meeting.
I really can't express enough how much I like the size of the Slate. It's the smallest screen size for Windows to still be decent with touch. 7" is too small for Windows.• Samsung Series 7 XE700T1A-A04US 11.6-Inch Slate (128 GB, Win 7 HP)
