Just out of curiosity, if this comes on CD's does it come with a CD Drive to read them with?

Realistically, if you don't have an external DVD drive, you should probably consider getting one. Whether you're installing software (like Office) or loading DVDs/CDs directly, it's a useful accessory and NewEgg has them starting at under $50.

Actually, I already have one. Got one when I got my Netbook. Used it only a few times. I was just curious what a typical user would do if they didn't have one.

Tip for changing the size of the Windows min/max/close controls on the title bar...

try this if the x is too small for your fingers....

go to ...
Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization\Personalization\Window Color and Appearance

select "Advanced Appearance settings..." at the bottom

choose "active title bar" and change the size value to 26..or whatever size fits your needs

One of the common criticisms you see about Win 7 tablets is bemoaning how it needs virus protection and is a lot of work to maintain or that you have to reinstall Windows once a year because Windows gets so sluggish after a year. Most such problems with windows are self-inflicted. Here's my advice for Windows security:

1) When you create the initial users, create an Administrator user called Admin and a Restricted user under your name. At least give the Admin user a password.

2) Always run the computer as the retricted user unless absolutely necessary to sign on as Admin.

3) Do not turn off UAC (user access control). Yes, typing in the admin password whenever you want to install something or change dangerous settings can be irritating. That's a good thing. It should make you stop and think do I really want to let this program do this?

4) Think twice or even three times before installing toolbars or browser plugins. Then don't do it.

5) Don't go looking for pirated software or porn. This is where nearly all viruses are picked up. Be cautious about freeware.

6) Make full disk backups. Windows 7 Professional has the ability to make a full backup of your disk image that can be restored onto bare metal by booting a recovery disk from cdrom or flash drive. Use it frequently. Windows will maintain however many full images there is space for and also only stores what's different between subsequent images so it's space efficient. Don't bother with the file-by-file backup facility in Windows 7. It's too slow. Use Sync Toy instead for that kind of backup.

7) Turn on the firewall and block everything. The Slate isn't a server, so there's no reason for anything to make contact from the outside.

8) Antivirus software is your last line of defense, not the first.

I have not had much time to experiment with my new slate, however, I have installed a few programs recommended here on this forum, and have tried the pen and the handwriting recognition and want to post that I could not be happier wih the performance and the ease of use for me!

I waited patiently for th release since Balmer did the demo at CES and admit that I was tempted to purchase something else over that long wait. Now that I have one, I am so happy that I waited. HP has a winner in this product!

The pen works great, the use of gestures is totally awesome. I watch people use the I pads and have tried one myself but the slate is so much better in my opinion. I am still getting used to the touchscreen and the pen. I think that my enjoyment with this device will only escalate

as you may have figured out by now, I'm just playing around with the pen and the handwriting conversion to text.

I hope that everyone gets their slate soon!

Do yourself a favor and have a USB keyboard handy for setting up and configuring all those passwords, etc.

Quick impressions: Feels very solid, speed is good, Aero is turned off by default, no problems with a generic DVD drive for installing office, office apps load and handle well.

The pen is a bit quirky, and the TIP is bad to float away at odd times. Gotta be an NTrig issue.

Still a great machine.

I made a couple quick videos. The first one i'm writing a little bit in onenote with my slate, and then on my c140x (wacom pen). Might just be me, but the slate pen seems quite a bit louder when writing. Also, It seems to be a bit picky if i don't apply more pressure when writing. I think it'll be fine after getting used to it. It's definitely not as smooth, but it works.

This one I was just playing around with the n-act gestures. You can obviously tell i don't know exactly what i'm doing but you get the idea I was following the n-act gesture guide partially. at one point it seemed to weird out, and earlier use for me it didn't seem to like working when i had firefox up. Not sure i'll end up using it or not..

Ran into a little problem. When using a user account (not admin) and the User Account Control comes up asking me for my admin password how do I enter it? The hardware TIP button does nothing. The TIP panal will not slide out.
