Re: Modding the Tx1000 part 1 (changing the thermal compound)
I performed this procedure and now my wireless works after about a year of inop. I did not use the penny, I used a piece of pure copper stock to fill the gap between the GPU & the heatsink.

What do you use to remove the black paint on the heat sink?

Anyone??
And Do I have to heat up anything?? I just want to apply thermal paste and the copper sheet and strip the paint off the heatsink.

Re: Modding the Tx1000 part 1 (changing the thermal compound)
in the posted videos comments one person said they used acetone and a tooth brush to remove the paint.
sorry it took so long to respond,

OMG!!!
I just did the exact same thing sfennimore's video showed him doing with an old dead dell laptop I was given to only recover the data off of and the dell booted up and is picture perfect now.
w00t and thanks sfennimore, I still have an MPC to try that with

Re: Modding the Tx1000 part 1 (changing the thermal compound)
the mpc just booted up and now it shows a picture
I have you guys here to thank for teaching me how to resolder a gpu.
recently however the dell's bios won't start up and the mpc is missing a lot of screws from just sitting around being messed with by me, friends, and pets so it's a long road to recovery for the mpc and the dell I'm thinking has shut down for good.
rest in pieces inspiron 1150,

Re: Modding the Tx1000 part 1 (changing the thermal compound)
Hmmmmm, I'm considering doing this mod, but have two questions regarding it.
First, does removing the black paint from the leaves of the heat sink really affect the overall temperature? I personally like the black colour better, and don't really feel like spending an hour scrubbing it off using acetone...
Second, for the GPU chip's thermal pad, where would I be able to find a copper sheet thick enough and how would I be able to cut out a shape resembling that of the chip? I tried going to Rona and Canadian Tires (I'm in Canada), but to no avail. I tried looking at deal extreme and ebay, but the only copper pad I can find is http://cgi.ebay.ca/DV9000-Copper-Shi...3286.m63.l1177 and I'm not even sure if it has the same dimensions... and I don't plan on putting a penny in my laptop, seeing that pennies aren't all copper nowadays, and it's not really flat, with many grooves in it. Though I can always destroy a penny with some sandpaper.
Any suggestions are appreciated... I am planning on doing the mods very soon, just before school starts again.Last edited by achuang; 08-29-2009 at 12:23 AM.

Re: Modding the Tx1000 part 1 (changing the thermal compound)
I just finished this mod and I have to hand it to Mighty Abacus, he is innovative, adventerous, and a five star computer tech. I am now idling at 42 CPU 62 GPU, which is down from 64 CPU and 80 GPU, and I only used Arctic Silver 3! I am happy with the CPU temperature but like others I am looking into the copper plate resolution. Can anyone post temps of their GPU with the Copper fix? I myself didn't remove the black paint and CPU wise I'm doing beautifully. It would be really nice though to have a cool flying GPU. Thanks!

Re: Modding the Tx1000 part 1 (changing the thermal compound)
I did the GPU mod... iTS THE BEST. To do it properly though do the following. First plop that penny in some ketchup for 10 minutes. Then sand it down so the back side is almost fully sanded and the abe side is about 80 percent sanded down. The open the tx1000 back up. Put a generous amount of Artic Silver on the GPU. Then squish the penny down comftorably and make sure there's nice contact and that the artic silver is making nice contact. Then put a second even layer on the metal part of the HEATSINK where it will make contact with the penny. DO NOT put it on the upper side of the penny, by making a nice coating on the heatsink gpu area and then placing it over the penny you will make GOOD contact. Then you have a arctic silver sandwich with a penny inbetween. With the CPU mod and the GPU mod my temps have gone from:
CPU: 64c to 42C
GPU 80C to 55C
I only used arctic Silver 3 and these temperatures will go down as it settles in. Hope this helps!
