Default New Slate 500 owner and Windows 7 user

    Hi fellow forumites,

I'm a new owner of this device and also Windows 7 as of yesterday.

Now, i'm after some much needed advice, so what do you recommend i should turn off or on in Windows 7 so as to prolong the longevity of the ssd unit in the Slate 500 ?

Additionally, i have a 64gb sd card in the unit and want to use that more than the non replaceable ssd unit. So, any recommendations or offered tips or tweaks with using the sd card as the main storage unit would be greatly appreciated.

    Regards,
    Bas

I have a 64gb sd in mine as well. I just use it as if it was a part of the regular drive. I have all my music, 38gb as well as my ebooks on mine.

    Hi Mate,

Mine is used as my main pc unit. I've been using it now for a few weeks and its a brilliant little device. I'm considering getting a wireless mouse for it. I don't need a wireless keyboard for long emails because these days i just upload a vid on youtube for staying in touch with family and friends.

    Regards,
    Bas

First, there's a sub forum under the HP forum specifically for the Slate. You can find a lot of information and more Slate owners will see your posts.

As far as your specific question, the only thing I know of that negatively affects your SSD is defragmenting. I believe it is turned off by default in Win7 when you have an SSD but it wouldn't hurt to check. In any case, an SSD never needs defragmenting because the OS doesn't control which sectors are written to, that is a function of the drive itself. And even if the OS could specify the sector, having data in adjacent sectors does not improve performance when you don't have a spinning platter with a read head.

As far as using your SD card more, Win7 just sees it as another drive. You could move everything to it but keep in mind that it's slower than the SSD. If you move cache and temporary files to it you Slate will slow down (I don't know by how much). A better strategy might be to move your My Documents folder to it. This has the added benefit that you can take it out and plug it into another PC if you want to copy documents.
